Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Can I save the plants?

I came down the stairs this morning to find a nitrite spike had wiped out most of my CR shrimp:( , bit upset about that but that is another matter) I removed the remaining handfull quickly into the neighbouring tank wich houses the blue pearl shrimp.

I decided to take the tank down and redo the lot as it is plaqued with tiny little ramshorn snails, I know for the rocks etc a bit of boiling water will do the trick in killing of any snails it houses but what about my plants, is there any way I can irridcate them of snails/eggs/babies and still use them in a shrimptank afterwards.

Plants are spikey moss, hair grass and marsilea hirsuta.

Thanks for the replies

btw the only reason for the instability in this tank must be the water supply we have enjoyed lately, thanks SDCC:( :(

You could splash out on a couple of Pygmy Puffers which would do a pretty good job on the snails, but quite obviously this would be a quite detrimental move if you returned your Shrimps while the Puffers were still in residence!

Unfortunately ideal conditions for Shrimps seem, by coincidence, ideal too for those pesky little snails!
The good thing is they don't seem to adversely affect plants, but they do end up being a right 'pain in the bottom' to quote someone from Saturday.

I have made up a fairly strong salt solution and plunged plants into that for a short time to rid them of pond snails but it's a rather 'hit-and-miss' affair.

I suppose your other option would be to check each plant individually, which would take forever and still not have a guaranteed success rate!

A bath for 4-6 hours in a strong hydrogen peroxyde or potasium permanganate solution will do the trick. Only use one not the two solutions couse they anihilate eachother. If you don't have any i'll give you some when you collect the rams. Other option whould be the same bath in a one of the solutions against snails you should be able to get in an lfs.

Copper does wonders against snails too.

Use as a BATH, not in the tank and rinse with plenty of water afterwards.

Most if not all the stuff that kills snails will kill your shrimp too if you use in the tank.

THe first two whould be only oxidants that "wear out" that's why I recomended them first.

I used them for plants I added to my shrimp tanks with no problems.I never add any plants to any of my

tanks before "giving them a bath" so I make sure if they are any "nasties" they remain there.
