Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

NO NO NO NO AND NO !

Post details of your setup, let's have a look see, it's fixable, believe me, unless you keep Vegetarians like Pacu, silver dollars etc.
Plastic and Silk plants suffer from Algae and a bugger to rid of it even by washing under hot water.

Its a 800L Tank... i use ferts but no Co2. I have a troops of flying foxs which keep fake plants completely free from algae. I have 3 fakes in at mo... they used to be covered in black algae but now spotless. I have alot of giant Vall and Java fern in the tank.. my 12" pleco tends to much on most plants,,, My gaint Vall has holes in it but it grows faster then he can destroy it. Iv tried lots of other plants with no luck. I also have a Green Terror, he is only 4" at mo... but i read he destroys plants?

Apart from the physical aspect of the rough and tumble caused by the large fish physically destroying the plants, most problems are as a result of poor water quality, high nitrates, phosphate etc, get those under control and you are half way there, depth of substrate and type are also important. Lighting for most species of plants is vital but you can get away with Java ferns and mosses of various types. A forum member had Java fern in almost total darkness and it was fine.

If you are happy with the fakes, that's fine too, you can bleach etc to clean but you don't have the change in the landscape that the real thing can afford.

Thought id post a pic of silk plants,, No problems with algae yet and its been a few weeks. Worth gettin if you dont have plant friendly fish (But you need a troop of Siamese algae eaters to clean them othere wise its stress)
