Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Anyone ever used this stuff? i went and bought some xmas moss today from dimitri in fintastic..i've never had any luck with plants, they tend to die off quite quick. I have T5 lighting in my tank which is on a timer 8 hours a day. i also have an air stone running 24/7 which im sure wont help. what the best way to get results using the liquid stuff?
Thanks
Andy

Hi Andy,

Ive never used co2 of any sort in my planted tank under t5s'. Try doing a day/night cycle with the lights, 12hrs on, 12hhrs off and use a good fert and you should see strong and healthy plants.

i dont have any rooted plants at all..so i dont think i need a fert as such! I do use a liquid feed(nutrafin plant grow)..but it doesn't have Co2. I do have a floating pad like plant. and i want to add the moss which im hoping takes over the branches of some root wood i currently have soaking.

I see, if the plants are doing well with the liquid feed then stick with it. I would still try keeping the lights on for at least 10 hrs. Just watch for algae as it thrives on good light and without many other plants it has no competition for nutrients. sorry I cant help with the co2 question as Ive never used it.

As with other methods of CO2 dosing, it is vital to maintain livestock levels on the low side or increase the amount of surface agitation at night, I think the liquid CO2 uses Oxygen in the water to change the carbon into CO2 therefore depleting the water of O2 at night.

just reading the info on the recommended dosage for aquariums with few plants...1ml per 100L.. Ive a 300L tank with no plants just some surface floating Lemna (i think its called) and im adding some xmas moss tomorrow. i think effect of the CO2 will be minimal as its a really light dosage. but thanks again for the heads up on PH as i wouldn't have known it would change.

Yep, Lemna, try Riccia, salvinia, great strippers of all of the baddies, excess make great Garden Manure, few people realise the benefits of the waste water for the plants in the Garden too!!

if you are dosing co2 (gas) 24h it's ok, or few single doses of liquid co2 won't affect on ph as well, but overdosing can drop ph down. I will buy liquid or tablets co2 for myself as well  but won't use it in tank with fishes just in 'plants trays' to grow moss and limnobium quicker :D
