Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hey,

I was also wondering is it possible to attach it the internal filter box??

On ebay it was called hanging moss...? im no plant expert..

Alex,
Java Moss doesn't 'root' as such, but attaches itself to things.
I would guess it wouldn't become attached to your filter box as it is too smooth, you would probably need to try to attach some mesh to the filter, if possible, and then the Moss should become attached to that - hopefully over a period of time and cover it from view.
Given adequate lighting it grows pretty vigorously and should start to expand pretty quickly.
You don't need CO2 for good growth with it, just pretty good lighting.

While the above, re CO2, is quite true, CO2 does and will help to prevent Algae growing through your lovely stand of ( Vesicularia, Java Moss ) if you use the lighting required. It goes without saying, good Water changes and controlled feeding of your live stock goes a long way to controling Algae.

Removing, or trying to remove Algae from Java Moss is so blasted disheartening.

Iv no problems with algae in my planted tank so hopefully java moss should be ok. I had a outbreak Of BBA, Cleared up now. I use Liquid Co2 and ferts

Im wondering do plecos eat Java moss? Im thinking of putting it in my other tank with large barbs and cichlids and common pleco. If i add a peice of bogoak with Java moss already attached and well grown would it be ok?

Never used CO2 just lighting and I supply all my tanks from one tank that produces the stuff by the ton. No algae problems either.

There are several varieties sold as java moss, I wouldn't know which is which but it might be worth posting a close-up photo here and someone will ID exactly what you bought and the best growing conditions. Never heard it called "hanging moss" before.

Mine came from your tanks Daragh, and I have supplied many people since with my surplus,as well as binning some.I found, however, that the best and healthiest crops I have had,are in unheated tanks. And of course a lot of shrimp in it keeps it clean and tidy.
My stocks are a bit low now,but I'm setting up some tanks that I need to grow it on for.
