Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

just today i added marimo ball, java fern and windalov fern too my tank and man am i excited, although it does not look a lot (for now) seeing as i spread it out, my tank looks a lot better and i can notice my fish are a lot happier brighter and equally as excited as me (mick i'l post some pics wen i get a decent cam or lights, roll on fathers day). 3 cheers to sincgar for sorting me out and not welching on the deal wen he could have

edit: if i do decide to go all the way down the planted road can you suggest a good substrate for plants (im using sand at the moment and can imagine that being a who.. to clean)

Mornin Darren,

I have a tiny black\grey gravel like substrate, not gravel tho, sticks to a magnet, not sure what it is, got it from Kev with a 240 roma a year ago and plants and corycats love it, very very light and competely smooth edges. Maybe Kev can tell us what it is?

This is me planted taken just now. Just that gravel, 5ml of CO2 a day and 15ml of liquid fert every 8 weeks. Lots of cats n tetras so have to keep CO2 lowish but plants still thriving, this is after a clearout this week too, removed some swords and grass, and half a shoppin bag of cuttings, can have some of anything you see in there matey.

Sand can be less than ideal for a planted setup as it can become quite compacted and roots can have a hard time getting through it. If you plan on going all out, use an undergravel fert like aquasoil and cover that with a fine gravel (2-5mm) and they should do fine depending on species and your lighting.

Darren, I used Underworld's Aquagrit when I had a planted setup. Really good stuff, but it's got rough edges so not good if you have Corys or loaches as it damages their barbs. I've about 15 kilo of it in a tub outside in the garden, would cost 45 euro in an LFS. You can have it for nothing if you want to pick it up. PM if interested.

If you're just starting with the planted thing the EasyLife Carbo stuff is pretty good, just don't overdose it. The profito stuff is good too.

thanks very much mate, but yeah i've got a few loaches which are the most entertaining in the tank so i'd hate to see them in discomfort, could i possibly use that and cover it wit sand?

I'd say sand would just filter down through it and clog it up, but you could probably top it off with pea gravel - which I also have about 10 kilos of that you are welcome to for free (switched to Marines recently, so it's all just sitting in a tub in the garden - the catch is it will need a good clean).
