Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

I heard today that it is no longer legal to sell red bellied piranha in Ireland anymore.Would anybody know for sure if this is true?

First I heard of it. I don't know why the red bellied Piranah would be singled out. Unless somebody in Government has been watching too many James Bond movies.

Regards,

Ken.

Defo. I mean if you think about it, why wouldnt they try to pull some of the more deadly marines from the racks first? Touch wood it doesnt happen, but there is far worse out there than the Piranha, and I hope to soon be the proud owner of one or two :)

Apparantly they are banned because there has been several caught, alive and dead in Irish rivers and someone is obviously panicking about it.They wouldnt have a prayer of survivin in the winter here.Again this is all rumour that Ive been hearing but I find it a bit hard to believe myself thats why Im seein if anybody knows for sure.I have two myself.Wont be declarin them or handing them over anytime soon.Anyway, probably just a rumour.

they dont pose any real threat to fish in irish waterways, like mentioned they have no hope to survive even in the summer, let alone breed and really be a threat like they would be in the states.

@viperbot: i wouldn't bother with them if i were you, 2 mates both have 2 each and got huge tanks for them but they stay in 1 spot all day and you can only house other large fish with them. they aren't interesting, feeding can be costly, and now both friends have them back in smaller tanks so they can have nice fish in the big tanks. very few lfs will take them on trades and i haven't seen any selling them recently either

I wouldnt completely agree with ya joey.I have two myself in a 400 litre tank. You can do a really nice planted tank with some nice bog wood.Let the water get stained a bit and it makes a really beautiful setup. They do not move about a lot like most fish but in the evenin they start to get a little bit active and argue a little bit.Feeding them is far from expensive.Beefheart is way cheaper than most fish food and depending on the size of the fish, can last a while.Prawns are also cheap enough too.

I should have been clearer in what I was trying to say, I meant I hoped to soon keep a couple of new marines ;) .
Thanks for the input though ;) .

i think if you gonna keep piranha you need about 10 of them to really appreciate them
but then that means one big ass tank!!!
