Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Weekend hi to the Peeps...

Anyone here got first hand experience and thus recommendations or advice on growing Glosso?

I'm really looking for first Hand knowledge not copied web Text.

Kev,
No answer really, but I could tell you how best to kill it off - along with all other Aquarium flora.
I could qualify as Ireland's no.1 plant murderer!

Darren or Zig would be your best advisors here, I would say.

From my experience I find it easier to grow and more forgiving compared to HC ‘cuba’. It settles in the tank quick, it’s easy to plant and grows faster than HC. The only problem I had with it, is to make it grow the way I want it to. It tries to grow up and you have to constantly trim it to make it spread into carpet. For that reason I prefer HC.

Cheers, can you give me an idea how to do the HC thing, I did hear about the Glosso heading upward, did you have any success with the HC ?

Here's my tank that I had with HC:
www.irishfishkeepers.com/cms/component/o...ew/catid,6/id,64580/
In the post I've detailed the specs of the tank. It took 4 months to get to that stage.
As you see a lot light (mainly because of the tank size), CO2, good water circulation and fertilizing are important.
Planting HC is probably the trickiest part. It takes time to settle but once settled it starts spreading nicely. It needs to be trimmed once it spreads. First month or so usually is pretty bad as it takes time to find correct balance (light, co2, ferts). Also brown algae starts taking over tank and plants, but this is why I put ottos in.
Feel free to ask questions I'll be glad to help.

Thanks for the great info.

Kev.

P.S. Just a question, I have posted a few things recently including things for sale, apparently these are visible to everyone but I am not able to read my posts nor any replies I may have received, Apologies if anyone replied and thought I was being rude ignoring them. Any help to resolve this is appreciated.

I'm very bored with my current set up and I'm strongly considering some aquascaping. Is CO2 absolutely necessary for HC and Glosso and whats the best substrate? I too am guilty of mass plant murder apart from a small anubias which refuses to die and is about 5 years old now.

You can try replacing CO2 with easycarbo or Excel, but in the long run CO2 system would be better.
As for substrate the best one is the one that works for you. I think I've wrote about substrates already in this forum.
The best one does not have to be the most expensive.
