Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

A builders providers should be able to get you "Natural roof slate/tile". Maybe even a few stray pieces or broken pieces that they would let you take for free. I got some at work but my LFS were selling them 2 full pieces for 1 euro. You could get onto Tegral the slate company for a few samples, tell them your interested in redoing your roof

Just make sure its natural because the artificial is made with cement and various fibres, i'm not sure how aquarium safe that is. You can tell the difference easilly, artificial will have factory cut edges and be perfectly straight. Natural will be a bit more rough.

Edit* This would be about 6mm thick, not sure if thats what your looking for.

I think what your looking for is like a natural flag stone. I was looking for some but couldn't get any in builders providers, they gave me a bit of a funny look because i was only looking for a few pieces. Try a stone specialist.

Something like this? www.stonesourceturkey.com/resimler/FLAGSTONE%204.tif_2.jpg

You could try Natural Stone Center on the Ashbourne Rd. I used this Company regularly as a Landscaper, they have a huge range of natural stone and are worth a call. They don't display everything on the site.

in the past i have gotten loads of it from a shop in limerick that actually makes and installs fireplaces .... they are always more than willing to give me some free of charge as the pieces i get are all off cuts . When i get the pieces in question they are generally an inch thick , so if yo don't mind takin a hammer to them and splittin them along their edge , you can end up with some nice shaped pieces as thick or as thin as you like . I'm sure if there is a similar business close to you that they wouldn't mind doing the same for you ....

Just an idea

Martin

I think we are all lost here, re reading the last post you are looking for Rocks and not flat pieces, correct?
Are you looking for Slate coloured Rock? if so, a pic would help, Most Garden centers provide various Rocks in digfferent colours in large cage type displays, Roadstone in Ashbourne or near the Naas Dual Carriageway have heaps that you could look through, this type of Rock, in the volume you'd need is expensive so a quarry would probbly work out cheapest.

Yeah, you are right Kev....not flat pieces, but slate rock (big thick rocks).

Rang natual stone yard and they said they didnt do it but might check them out for an alternative!

Can anyone suggest an alternative grey coloured rock that would be suitable for a pond with waterfall?

Thanks.

If you are still looking, there's an actual slate quarry just off the n81, near blessington, in kilteel co kildare. There's probably loads of offcuts and rubble lying around

No worries.

No guarantees though - I don't know if the owners are amiable or if they'd charge you 50 euros a kilo. A lot of the slate seems to be brown rather than black or dark grey, but it's a nice colour and some of the local Walls are built of it and it looks pretty good.

I'll try them myself I'm the next week and see if they'll play ball

Also - meant to mention - the fill used for road & construction is usually crushed carboniferous limestone. It looks nice and black, but its still made of calcium carbonate and will, I expect, harden the hell out of your water.
