Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Paludarium was created by wolfsburg (wolfsburg)
Hi folks,
I just thought I'd share a few photos of my latest project... a small paludarium. I have wanted to do this for a while after I saw some amazing large setups in a specialist shop in the UK this time last year.

The tank is a 30X30X45 Exo Terra arboreal vivarium. The filter/pump is a fluval mini, there is also a small 50W heater. I will light the tank too. I may add a fogger, but only for pure naffness!

I have added some semi-aquatic plants. I plan to add some more plants for emmersion and immersion, such as anubias, hydrocotyle, cryptocorne, microsorum, riccia and moss.

The "wall" piece is the top half of a resin ornament that I had to cut to fit in... it doesn't look too bad and will improve with moss/ algae growth. I did originally try to build the structure with expanding foam but that was a complete nightmare!

I obviously need to add substrate (silver sand and pea gravel mix... my favourite! ) and I will paint the back of the tank black.

The waterfall/ trickle is to keep humidity up, oxygenation, filtration and also just for overall looks.

Livestock is not a priority in this project but I MIGHT add some shrimp and/or small fish in time. Water volume is only around 7.5L I don't want to add any terrestrial animals as I think the viv is too small for this.

Looking good this far, will be anticipating good plant growth which will make it look even better in time.
Keep us updated on this, it's something I plan to try when the winter passes so am doubly interested.

Will do John. If I like how it goes I will up-scale in size to allow for some nice things that flower... although I had imposed a one tank rule on myself when we moved into the new place but I've already broken that one!

Here's come nice light reading on plant use...

...although most of the non-aquatic plants listed wouldn't be suited to my "compact" setup.

I'll give that a look later, a group of Pygmy Corys would work well in your set-up...I'm planning a shoal in my (somewhat larger) display next year.

Yes, 3-ish pygmaeus might be nice. Corys do seem to be a popular choice for paludariums.

Its more about the plants at the moment though, if I have to choose between filling the water space with plants or having a few fish... I'd choose the plants!

Yeah I probably will! Not enough water for fish really.
