Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Stetnik, I remember your post of the Aponogeton madagascariensis, I thought I’d show mine….but is mine better than yours?

The plant (well, there are 2 plants in view)

And…..

The flower spike….mega or what?

(the beauty on the right is the flower spike, the beauty on the left is my hand)

This is one of the ones from Seahorse.

How is yours doing?

Very nice Ian,

Here's a few pics, the biggest Leaf stands at about 18 ins and about 4-5 inches across.

They are looking very good Kev.
Looking very lush.

It is interesting, I believe yours are from the same batch as mine.
The leaves on mine are little narrower, and the fenestration is more closely spaced.

I should really set-up a tank specifically for plants and then get fish to suit those conditions.
At present these are in a Discus tank, so the Discus take priority for want of conditions and I don't add CO2 nor fertiliser.
Normally I always use iron in Discus tanks, but this is the only Discus tank without an iron substrate.

I'd like to get back to doing some Aponogetom species....but now we have started to do-up a new reptile room then there maybe a chance to set-up a few of our bigger tanks. (My OH doesn't know that yet...and she is not on this forum :))

Cheers Ian,

I just use Feropol and Easycarb, the Substrate is JBL and Amazon Soil, The new growths are brown/pink and open up quickly.

I'd advise you to snip off Flowers asap as this can send the corm into hibernation, something that in an Aquarium environment, can be difficult to break.

Have a word with Johnh, he may be able to re-direct your other half to a more suitable website like www.letmypartnerhavemoretanks.com

I'm wanting to propogate from the 'seeds'.
Did it years ago....when I was younger and had the 4 or 5 years to wait for anything decent to happen (a bit like growing orchids from seed, but when I now look at waiting 15 years for a Vanda to flower....I don't venture there anymore).

The problem of hibernation with these is that they don't always come out the other end....but the plants were a reasonable price, so maybe it is worth losing it for trying to get some seeds.

I really must move into growing annual plants now.....too old for the long projects and all that. :)

My OH is also a fish keeper.....and she is as bad as I am when she gets to the shop. It is only when she is not in the shops that she mentions the number of tanks that I have (she doesn't count her tanks)
