Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hi,

Has anyone experience with electronic CO2 controllers? There is a few controllers like Dennerle, JBL and Sera but they are very pricey and there are some cheaper units on ebay like this one .

Thanks

I have the one in the link.
The main thing in the controller is the probe also to get accurate readings you need calibrate them constantly.
BTW: it is not CO2 controller but PH meter/controller.

What are you going to use it for? If it’s for planted tank then I would really suggest not wasting your money as a PH level does not indicate CO2 levels. Drop checker would be a much cheaper and more accurate in this case.

Alan,

I looked around at the CO2/pH controllers to automate my plant setup as my missus will be looking after the tank for a few months.
I bought this cgi.ebay.ie/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&it...geName=STRK:MEWNX:IT CO2 controller about 3 weeks ago and have been running it since.
It seems to be able to keep the pH with 0.1 of the set target of about 6.5 from a tap water pH of about 7.3.

It may not be as fancy looking as the JBL/Denerle/etc controllers but it does the same job.

What size tank are you running it on....? and is it hooked up to a F/E or Co2 bottle...?

I want down ph around 6.5 and think this is the best way of doing it plus my plants will love it.

The JBL is dear but has alot a good functions to it. The full kit is alot of money but i dont need a co2 and the other bits that come with it can get them at a better price on ebay.

Cheers for the link.

Had a look at it seems to be a good bit of kit.... Ill be running mine on a betta 1300 with a sump so im talking 560+.....!!!!

I know a sump its the best for a planted tank running co2, cause i will lose alot of co2 using the sump but im thinking long run with the tank.

What other equipment did you have to buy for your co2 setup...?

Alan,

My co2 setup is 5kg F/E -> dual gauge regulator with needle valve -> solenoid valve -> check valve -> bubble counter -> UP CO 2 atomiser on the external filter output pipe feeds into tank via lily pipe.

The solenoid valve is controlled by the pH/CO2 controller with the pH electrode beside the external filter intake

Its nearly the same as my old system but adding the controller will make life so much easier in the long.

Keeping my ph at a nice level 6.5 is what and co2 is the easiest why for me to go. Think the controller is a must buy......!!!
