New To Plants

Hi,
John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.
I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.
With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.
I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.
If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.
I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.
I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.
Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hi All, I always keep Malawis so could never keep plants....well thats untrue I could keep them, floating or stuck to the filter.
Anyway I have small planted community tank all growing well and read that you keep the surface still during lighting hours and agitate during lights out (the co2/oxegen thing). What I can't find out is "how long after lights out do plants stop absorbing co2 and start absorbing oxegen" ...or have a read some crazy mans article.
In a nut shell what I want to know is, after lights out when will I set the airstone to come on.
Pygmy Chain Sword
Crypt Becketii
Gymnocoronis Spilanthoides
Rotala Indica
All choosen cause of low light requirements easy keep....so I've read.

What I can't find out is "how long after lights out do plants stop absorbing co2 and start absorbing oxegen" .
I was also looking for this information and did not find any reasonable answer. I came to the conclution that it can depand on a plant but I do not have any scientific explanation it, just my thoughts...
I stopped using air stones in my planted tank and everything is OK. There is no certain period of time after swithing off lighting when you should put airstone on - you can do it immediately after or not at all...
I know fishkeepers who use CO2 24/24 hours and do not use air stones at all.
I think you should make some experiments and use your intuition to find the best way for your tank. Plants and fish will show you whether you are on a proper or wrong way...

Thanks Katherine,
I'll do exactly that starting tonight and I'll check them first thing in the morning. I couldn't see the plants absorbing enough oxegen during lights out to cause to major a problem..

Unless you have oxygen breathing stock, I really don't think you need to worry, normal agitation and even meniscus to Air contact should be sufficient to keep things on an even keel, CO2 is in your Water in a couple of different forms, carbonic acid being only one kind. Co2 addition during Daylight hours is beneficial whether in Liquid or gaseous form because the process of Photosynthesis needs copious amounts to combine with light etc to produce sugars that build plant cells. This activity during high light levels involves a high rate of metabolism which isn't the case during the second phase of the photo period where CO2 is used mainly in the process of growing roots and root hairs, roots don't produce Oxygen and therefore require it to survive and grow. Most plants do most of their growing in Daylight where growth hormones ( Auxins ) determine direction and rate of growth.
Aquatic plants require both O2 & CO2 at night.
P.S. CO2 should NOT be left on at night if you have any living thing other than Plants in the Set up because you can have major ph swings which can lead to deaths of Fish and inverts. Plants store Oxygen and CO2 within the Cells so my suggestion is leave the Aeration on and CO2 on a Timer.

I wouldn't use airstone if ur filter is circulating water well enough, try not to agitate water surface too much because ALGAE prefer an oxygen rich environment, much more than plants do. Plants and fish will have more than enough oxygen at night, with some circulation, not agitation!
No mouth bigger than the smallest fish in tank.
