Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

I am so sorry David, the three pictured aren't Aquatic,

1 is Neanthe bella, a type of Palm ! ( This is a juvenile plant ) it starts off with a single leaf, then a leaf with a number of leaflets and then a small Palm Tree.

2 is Dracaena tri-colour, a lovely House Plant.

& 3 is a plant called Polka dot Plant, another House Plant.

clown loaches love the dracaena's, had one ripped to bits by then in a day. i too have been caucght out many times with house plants sold under water

its a shame alot of places (i've seen sponsor shops with similar in stock) sell these as "aquatic" plants, suppliers should be ashamed of themselves!

That's a pity, I'm in Dublin.

I have spoken to some of the guys that do the lists in various stores and they have told me that they get so many requests for those type of plants that they get them in but I feel they should advise the potential buyer that they hang on in the Tank for a brief amount of time and die, there are no exceptions , they all die.

People buy compulsively, visually and some of the Plants are really beautiful, really colourful and have nicely shaped leaves so you can't blame people for wanting them.

Hi David. Try and read a little bit about genuine Aquatic plants, nice books available(also the net)& you'll be amazed how quick you get to know the real ones, you'll recognize their names on lists etc. Don't even place those plants in tank, they're gonna rot, giving you more maintenence, which i'm sure you don't need! Do ur research, then invest!(always a good adage in fishkeeping)Keep the faith.:) Good luck bud. :)

Hi David,

This is where the LFS beats the Web Hands down, you can see what you are getting, you know they are alive, you know they were grown correctly as even a few days in transit, because of lack of light they will begin to look drawn and yellowing, " most" LFS know their plants but still will sell the Land plants if you insist, You have re-dress, if you are sold the Plant and realise later it's unsuitable, you will be given a proper alternative or a refund.

I know that many Web based business will be honourable but I prefer NOT to have the doubt swirling around my Head, the dissatisfaction and anger on non receipt or receipt of mush and the stress of chasing the errant company for replacements or refunds, the extra I have to pay LFS is, in my opinion, worth it.

Kev, could you help me, please? I bought this beautiful plant as Hemiographis exotica and as you can see it rot. It was sold as aquatic plant but I started to think it is more suitable for palludarium instead of aquarium. Am I right, unfortunately? Is there any way to save/rescue it as I like it very much? Does it have any special requirements that I am not able to meet?

Hi Katherine,

Take a sharp blade, not a Knife because it will crush the stem, cut or slice below the Node, that's the area just below the Leaves, leave about 2 mm of the stem below the Leaves, get a pot and some Compost, firm the compost slightly, make a small hole with a Pencil, take the Blade and cut the Leaf in half at right angles to the leaf main vein, (the larger leaves) it reduces water loss, stick the cutting in and water in, not soaking just enough to settle the cutting and cover with a Plastic bag and an Elastic Bag to hold in place over the Pot.

Kev,
Just have a look if I did it according to your instructions. I can still correct something as I left one part of the plant that is in a good condition.

1. I took a small fish tank (I don't have a flower pot), put some gravel at the bottom, add some compost on it, then I water the compost

2. Then I took my plant, cut it with a sharp blade:

3. Then I planted it into the fish tank and covered with clinging film due to lack of big enough ribbon bands:

Is it acceptable?

More than ! I'm impressed, if more of my students paid so much attention I'd be a happy Guy, make sure the compost isn't wet, just damp.

Really impressed how you followed the instructions.

Thanks Kev, you're polite as usually. I can only follow short and clear instructions. :) By the way I learnt in the meantime that it was a swamp plant better for palludarium as in a fish tank it won't last long. It's a pitty I didn't know it earlier.

Another question to you: What are these plants? (I have a lot of plants in my tank that I am not able to recognize...):

no. 2 is Bacopa, I think.
no. 3 is Glossostigma, a lovely carpeter.

Kev i think you need to give that detective hat a little twist.
I think plant No.1 is the lovely little Marsilea hirsuta. A great little plant for the low light tank.
It's like a darker and much slower growing glosso.

Hi, just have a look what I found today in my tank - marsilea shows 4 feaves. At the begining I thought it was a floating plant but thanks to your idenditication I was able to find some information on it.

Joey, I hope Kev will not abandon our forum and we will still be able to make use of his knowledge.
