Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

180 litre tank,well planted with 12 tiger barbs,12 cherry barbs,4 SAEs,1 AFF and 1 RTBS...........

Plants include water wistertia,bacopa,java moss,weeping moss,anubias nana,large anubias,amazon sword,moss balls,twisted vallis and cryptocorne.........

Water parameters are Nitrates 5-10,PH 7.2,zero Ammonia and zero Nitrites........

Using 2 x T5 juwel highlight tubes that came with the tank along with 2 reflectors...........(Juwel Rio 180 tank)

I fertilize with Easylife EasyCarbo daily and Easylife Profito weekly

Carry out weekly 30% water changes so my Nitrates are never above 10

Tank is running about 8 weeks and all is well EXCEPT! my anubias nana is picking up alot of diatoms :-((

Anybody got any suggestions as to how to couteract this unsightly problem?????....

What substrate do you have? Silicates in excess can cause Diatomaceous blooms.

Substrate is Instant Aquarium Sunset Gold sand made by Caribsea........

Im wondering if I keep pruning the anubias to encourage new leaf growth will the diatoms stop reappearing on the new leaves.......

Im asking this as ive heard diatoms are common in newly set up tanks......My tank is barely 2 months old and the anubias have been in there since the start....All the other plants were added gradually over that period and dont have any algae issues...

There are actually no other algae issues at all....

My SAEs and AFF are doin a good job for me....Even my young RTBS is munchin away on algae :)

When i set up the tank i introduced a team of Ottos as algae control but had to take them out as the Tiger Barbs where a bit fond of their tails :-((

So putting in a team of Ottos now is not really an option even though i know Ottos love diatoms :(

I guess im lookin for an alternative remedy to a cleanin crew of fishies

If any Plant is going to show problems it will be Anubias, they are Algae magnets. Removing leaves from such a slow growing Plant isn't advisable as to do so so often would deplete it of energy and it would decline.

I'd recommend leaving the Tank alone for a while, Diatomaceous Algae has a way of just coming to an end in new setups as it's food gets depleted, it can just disappear over night.

Possible solutions:
1. Increase water chages
2. Get some otocinclus they should clean the leaves.

Also are you sure that you have diatoms?
