Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Surprisingly, I have it only for 3 weeks in my tank. it arrived as a rather small plant so to show the beauty of its lieaves I planted it in the middle of my tank. Within these 3 weeks it tripled its size and started to bloom. Here are its flowers:

The plant is really very beautiful but took nearly half of my tank so I decided to re-plant it to the corner to let 'breath' other beauties as lotoses, crinum and aponogeton madagascariensis. When I took it from the gravel - another surprise: roots. I didn't expect to see so many new roots in such a short time. The bulb I planted 3 weeks ago was not impressive at all and now:

Looking good.

Are you going to rise to challenge of getting seeds and growing them?

I'd love to!!! But I have to learn how to do it. I have no experience in collecting seeds and cultivaiting water plants. I don't know what conditions should be met to achieve success with it.

Excellent plant K. I once pruned one back and as time went on i forgot it was in the tank, then noticed one day it had begun to grow again from the bulb, having been dormant in substrate for months.Try not to move it to often once it has sent down roots. Let seeds fall naturally into gravel, you might be surprised in time. :)

Hi A1_aquarist, I will leave it in this place for 3 months till I move to another place :) I am considering purchasing ADA Amazonia substrate - good opportunity to change gravel when moving out and will be forced to re-start fish tank. At the moment aponogeton has 3 flowers! I am going to cut off some old leaves today to control its size. I read somewhere that the plant should have time for rest but didn't find enough information. I don't know how to do it. I would like to be surprised with baby-plants!! :)

Hi K,defo go for ADA soil if u can(bit pricey)but worth it,it doesn't even have to be topped with gravel, its great. Some people rest Aponogetons in bucket or tray of damp river sand, bury about 2 inches deep, keep sand damp, don't let it dry out or waterlog it either. Only do this though if plant is totally exhausted with no leaves or growth. You could do same with seeds, wait for seed pod to harden and dry, then place individual seeds from pod into damp sand. When they germanate, show green shoots, trans plant to aquarium. Try catch seed pod before it naturally opens, when it turns hard & dry. Shade for resting bulbs, sunny window sill for seed germanation. Cheers K :) Aidan.

Katherine,

I had an Apogoton crispus for three months that Rory gave me, I just dropped into a 75 Litre with Ocellated Shelldwellers, high ph and KH, it popped out a couple of embryo Leaves that grew to about four inches, I decided to strip the 75 Litre and popped the tuber into a Lido 120 with, in my opinion the best soil, Amazon soil, under a 2.5 inch layer of Manado, a Fire Extinguisher CO2 system and Seachem Fertilisers consisting of micro and macro Nutrients, the thing took off like a Triffid, it is currently 3 foot long and many Flower spikes, I will upload a Photo later, an amazing plant, I have been growing terrestrial and Aquatic plants now for over 30 years and have never seen anything like it.

I have always had Aponogoton madagascariensis or crispus in my collection, I'd never have a Tank without one or the other. my Chocolate Gouramies love the folds to hide in.

Kev.

PS. I here's a link to a very neat App from Seachem for dosing, I have it installed in an iPhone 4 and it works a treat. itunes.apple.com/app/dose/id307075679?mt=8
