Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hi i have been looking into adding some plants to my tank i only started the cycling so the question is do i wait until i have fish in the tank before i add the plants.

What plants are best to start off with and what substrate do they prefer.

I would prefer not to add a co2 system right now but if i have to i will can someone post a link to co2 systems and recommend one for a beginner.

you dont have to wait for the tank to cycle, just get the correct p.h and temp for the right plants you want.Substrates vary but the the denerle, manado and oliver knott stuff is among the best (ADA if you are feeling flush)For co2 if you don't want to break the bank easy carbo is your olny man.Very effective co2 delivery in a liquid form.If you want any information on types of plants and their care go here

www.tropica.com

we have every single plant in their catalogue available next weekend if you are about.;)

dont make me come over there.

u can stick with pure sand and plant cryptocorynes in it wit addition of micro elements int tablets to the roots
it gives great effect in long run, the only thing is that they grow pretty slow
on the plus side - no need for co2, low to moderate light requirements, they thrive in hard water
her's example of how it looks, the one at the back is cryptocoryne aponogetifolia, and smaller one in front is cryptocoryne wendtii

Hi, there are different 'schools' some say 'plant before introducing fish into the tank', some say 'do it simultaneously'. It's up to you. I started with fake plants and then I switched for 'real ones'. Curently, I am going to planted tank and I have fish in it. But there is one thing I would do right now. The substrate you put into the tank does not contain fertilisers. To create better environment for platnts, I would put a layer of fertilised substrate under the one you have. It is easy to distiguish fertilized from unfertilized ones. Fertilized substrates shouldn't be washed while unfertilized ones as JBL's Manado have to be washed.
