Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Derek,

Everything looks very lively and healthy as usual, looking forward to seeing the Koi-Angle fry. You also seem to have plenty of fry at different sizes, best of luck.

Didn't realise you kept Tropheus too, some sturdy looking big dubosi there

thanks everyone for the comments and input

gb. the black fish is otopharanx lithobates black orange dorsal or otopharanx black/gold. it is not yet officially scientifically described afaik.

al. yes i did make most of the tanks.

2poc. the orange fish are female and juvenile saulosi. msobo and estherae are indeed very similar when young
the tropheus i recently got from chrism and they are big handsome brutes all right.

tom. i am looking forward to seeing how the angel fry turn out the pair have bonded well and are great parents.

that is brilliant footage. the tanks and fish look great. Daragh well done on the editing. the stills are amazing and the description that pops up is great for those of us not well up on our cichlids and basically for any beginner who wants to know what they are looking at.

It is really great thanks for the look see.

Goldy, I had to wait until Derek posted teh details to add the annotations as I would not be 100% sure I would get them right, as you know cichlids are not my thing, though I am getting to like a few like this cracker Derek had a while ago, pity the photo is out of focus, but you get the idea.

daragh
just had a look at the annotations and they are really cool and proffesional.
except the caption for the saulosi is wrong there are no msobo or estherae in the tank.
in my post i was just aggreeing with 2poc that the salosi and these species have similar colour when young.
the other species in that tank are iodiotropheus sprengerae and careleus. sorry for misleading:blush:
the fish in the still near the end is protomelas taenielatus boadzulu or "red empress".

the video is so well done, you should be out at the amazon working for nat. geo.

Whoops! The annotations are now corrected, I was thinking the orange ones all looked the same to me and I was wondering if they were three different species how you would separate them!!

Thanks for the compliment, but the Amazon would not be for me unless there was a 5 star hotel on the bank and nice temperate weather :)

I can't see myself thrashing true the jungle with a myriad of nasty critters for company.

i have just been looking at videos of saulosi in the wild and they are fantastic. the females gather in huge numbers around rocky outcrops with the dominant males darting among them and the immature males hanging around in seperate bachelor groups nearby. i guess the fact they live away from the crowded coasts gives them a more tolerant and peaceable nature than most mbuna.

I meant to say a funny thing about videoing these fish was the saulosi (hope I hae the name right this time - the orange lads near the end). They are so orange the camera had trouble focusing, they are so intense in real life that they confuse the camera and it starts to hunt for focus, that's why they appear a bit blurry. They are actually more orange than they appear on film, it that's possible!

yes daragh the orange in the salosi is very intense especially using the old fashioned original tropical tubes which really brings out reds and yellows.

i got the original pair from johnh a few years ago and soon realised that they were good pedigree fish (they breed true with no dodgy variation with offspring and the adult size is correct) and have continued with them since. they had been sold to john as red zebra.

a lot of salosi (coral or red?) in the hobby are chronically cross bred for redder colour with similar more agressive and larger species such as tropheops and msobi. (chief suspects). when the fry from these hybrids grow it usually is apparent that the species is not pure. (they grow larger and don't exactly resemble their parents.)

a lot of mbuna have similar colours yellow/red females and blue barred males and the best way to id the species is head/face shape and dentition but juveniles are nearly impossible to id with any certainty.
