Compatability while breeding
×
Hi,
John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.
I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.
With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.
I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.
If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.
I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.
I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.
Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

I'm a bit frustrated with trying to breed my Thorichthys Meeki (Firemouths)
What I'm considering now is the suitability or unsuitability for that matter of their tankmates in 400L.
I have 8 T.Meeki
There is currently 2 severums, 2 plecos, 10 corys and just recently juvi convicts added until rehomed.
The female has being trying but cannot get enough interest from either of the 2 bigger males.
I noticed her trying to claim a spot in tank, but she was pushed out by the severums at different occasions. She just hung around until they moved off again.
The severums have size advantage aswell as the plecos and both will just go where they want to.
I'm down to 2 tanks (400 & 190) until a shed appears.
The 190 currently has one pleco, 3 cories and 2 firemouths. I have some Cryptoheros Nanoluteus arriving this week which will be going in to this tank. So I'm a bit stuck for having to rearrange things for now if needed.

it is unlikely that the firemouths will breed successfully in your current set up. they are not overly assertive and will be unable to protect their spawn from the severums and plecos. they are nervous parents and usually need a quiet tank with plenty of plant cover. also the female is going to mature quicker than the males which i suspect is the case with your fish.
30 tanks specialise in african cichlids, angelfish and various catfish

I was thinking she was more mature, especially considering the size difference which would be evident as you mentioned previously to me (at a meeting?)
She had been showing interest with the smaller of the 2 biggest males which was the dominant male. Though lately she was trying with the biggest one.
The C.Nanoluteus are to be housed in the 190L, but I think they might be delicate/nervous to have a more robust firemouth in with them let alone possible breeding pair.
