Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

More Rainbow Fry and continuing Discus spawning problems

I have more Rainbow Cichlid fry now. The interesting thing this time is that both Mum and Dad are protecting them. Last time Mum was left on her own. Can only assume that with the first batch the father said 'You're what !!" and did a runner but has been brought to task this time round and made to live up to his responsibilities. :)

As for Discus - hmmm, can't figure this one out. Free swimming again yesterday and then all disappeared - and the filter was not the problem. I'll let them try again, assuming they do, but after spawning I plan to remove Dad and see what happens. Happy to hear of any other suggestions in this area, especially from those with experience in breeding Discus. All parms water wise are good.

Ok, so removing Dad on Monday after the Saturday spawn didn't work. Mum ate all eggs Monday night. Will give them a rest for a few days before putting them back together with a view to removing mum if the respawn.

I would nener remove any of the parents during spawning.Moving the dad will spook te mother. All the onus will be on on parent feeding the young and it might not be up to it and end uup injured or sick. Are you leaning a night light on and is there much traffic walking by the tank.

Hi Harry,

Wish I had received your input before removing Dad.

In researching as much as possible in the internet I have come across people who have removed one of the parents which proved successful. Was hoping it would for me. I'll put Dad back in with Mom in a few days.

As for the traffic, no not much where they are but I could look for somewhere quieter.

Night light is a no as only Mom and Dad were in that tank and I though the nightlight would only be required if they needed to protect from other fish. Prior to this spawn I was getting to free swimming before they disappeared and this happened once during the day and once by night. Anyways, I'm willing to try it.

Mom and Dad reunited. Where Dad seemed fine without Mom, she is much happier now. I've taken a large patience pill and will let them get on without my interference. If it happens it happens.

I've taken the advice on board and will use it. At this point I'll stop annoying everyone with my spawning Discus and will only report on new developments in this area.
