Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hi guys my Krib fry have gone from around 50-60 on Thursday down to just two . Its their first spawn though so im happy enough. But in the past day or two the male and female seem to have lost a bit of interest in protecting their remaining fry. They both seem to be leaving the fry on their own for long periods at a time and are allowing the other fish to enter their territory unchallenged. Are they both just exhausted? or is this normal activity?

Cheers Stuart.

Hi Stuart,

Not so much normal behaviour but its not uncommon for a first spawning. When they spawn again, you will find they are a lot more protective of the fry. If you are concerned about the fry, you could try moving them to a small tank on their own, but this can stress the parents too. I have seen it done and the parents spent days searching for the fry. If I recall correctly from your pics, you have tetras in the tank too, they will take any opportunity to pick off the fry if unattended.

Cheers,

Bill.

Bill is spot on. Kribs are probably one of the best parental fish out there, but they don't really figure it out on the first spawn. First time is like a trial run, they'll get it right the next time. Your problem then is what to do with all the fry

Yeah cheers lads, the tank seems to be alot calmer than it was when they first spawned. all the other fish were looking for snacks and the kribs were busy fighting them off. but as the parents seem to have relaxed a bit so has the rest of the fish.the cory's make the odd run for the fry and the parents head them off , the two that are left are quite a bit bigger than they were last week so im hoping they will survive.

How long would the parents normally care for the fry?

@christy, any fry that make it i'll be passing them on to my LFS , i have no interest in selling them i just like to watch the process.

Stuart.
