Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

I bring good news!!!!

I set up an 85ltr tank with 6 female apisto agassizi about 2 weeks ago and added a male on Sunday (If you read any of my earlier posts they were originally confused with apisto cacatouides)
Bish Bash Bosh I was feeding them earlier today ( Wednesday ) and I noticed some strange behaviour and colourings from one of the females - Her colouring changed to a brighter yellow and her dark stripe reduced to a dark spot. She was darting out from a corner of the tank, grabbing food then retreating quickly, only to stop to take a pop at any other fish, apart from the male, along the way.

I've taken a video and will try upload it now.
She has laid on a cattapia leaf.

I'm absolutely delighted with such early and positive success!!!!

Any advice on how to increase the eggs chances of hatching / fry surviving would be greatly appreciated.

You can kinda see the eggs at the very end of the clip, they are laid on the leaf.

Do they pose a threat to the mother of the eggs?

she would be less stressed, you have a breeding pair now so the rest of the females in the tank and taking up unnecessary space

Makes sense I suppose
Will he not breed with any of the other females too?
I read that the makes form a harem of females?

If he mates with all of them you'll have fry in every corner of the house

it is possible he will harem breed but the now protective mother could now attack and kill females she sees as a threat to her fry, its your choice... females have been know to steal fry from other mothers as well.

I don't need to worry about it for now anyway, woke up this morning and the eggs are gone.
They are still defending their territory though.

It may get very stressful for other fish if the pair are aggressively protecting territory. I don't have a lot of experience with apistos but I have seen them being quite aggressive

Good luck with them. The tank furniture can make a big difference to how well she can keep fry safe and as your furnishing looks minimal she could kill the rest, on the other hand having more females can keep the male busy and away from the maternal female. Your tank is big enough for a harem but isn't setup for it tbh. I've seen apisto tanks before that were packed with both sexes but some types are better in pairs.

What water parameters are you testing for?

Cheers Davey . . . The tank is a work in progress, I didnt expect them to spawn so soon. I had only added the sponge filter about an hour before i realised they had spawned, and as you can see I added it directly above where she spawned! What would you recommend I change/add to the furnishings off the tank to make it more suitable?

Going back to the filter, I added it so that when/if any eggs hatch they wouldn't be sucked into a filter. Theres a Fluval U2 at the other end of the tank, which will suck in any fry so thats gotta go. Anyway, back to the point I was making - The sponge filter is attached to an airstone and it doesn't seem to be doing a very good job at filtering so what would you guys recommend I use a suitable filter in a breeding tank?

My parameters are:
Ammonia, Nitrate and Nitrite are at 0
pH is between 7.2 and 7.6
I will be adding water filtered through Peat to reduce the pH (As I said, work in progress ;) )
