Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Have an f1 pair, and so far they have laid a few batches of eggs but never any fry. The eggs seem to last two days then female picks them all up in her mouth never to be seen again, have tried to take eggs but this doesn't help as they do not hatch either. Has anyone got any tips?

Get a different male I'd say because he could be shooting blanks as they say.
Personally I don't agree with taking the eggs from the parents because to me if they can't care for them then their not worth breeding as the offspring will most likely do the same but how have you tried hatching them?
The parents could still get the hang of it (although she could keep eating them in fear of you removing them again) and thats where patience come in on our part. Would the male be after the eggs either?

We need more info like any tank mates etc

Well they have lasted the night lots seem to have turned white though. I tried the eggs in a tumbler that I had for my Malawi with no joy. In the tank there are 2 small plecs and a large jack Dempsey who for the most part seems uninterested apart from the odd show of strength, not going near eggs just chasing parents. Thanks

Perhaps for first time parents, being alone in the tank may be a benefit....
The mother (to be) might be getting fretful that the others are looking to eat the eggs, thus she ends up eatting them herself....

Try seperating everyone and see how that works out

young fish/newly formed pairs can take a few attempts before they get it right and they could be eating them to stop any of the others getting them i would suggest moving them to a tank set up for breeding.they may stop laying for a little while until settled again.Feed live food when conditioning and they should get it right.IMO fry that are raised by the parents generally turn out better.
best of luck
john
