Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

My pair of Bettas are mating...He has built a bubble nest and both of them are wrapping around each other...Also the female is playing dead every once in a while..(Is that normal)

This all started during the night...I woke up to observe all this first thing this morning...

So what do I do next?

I need advice from people who have bred Bettas before....

Ed, your first job will be to - once the ritual is complete - remove the female if there are insufficient places for her to hide herself away as the male will, nine times out of ten, mercilessly attack her, causing much hurt - sometimes even killing her!
If there are other occupants in that tank you should also consider their removal too
You might want to consider getting some food ready for when the fry are free-swimming but this will be not an immediate worry, just something to bear in mind.
And, to your other question, yes - it is quite normal, the female Betta goes into what can only be described as a 'sort of' trance (momentarily) after each spawning embrace, so no need for worry on that score
Doubtless there will be more advice forthcoming, but that's my advice for the immediate future
Good luck with the brood.

Ok it looks like he is starting to attack her! Is the courtship over that quickly?
Should i remover her now?

Courtship can last from a few minutes to a few hours depending on the individual fish!
If you can't remover her immediately put her in a breeding box to keep her out of harms way!

That would e what I would do, the timescale seems about right, if they've been spawning since first light.
If you're able to look up into the nest from under (a little mirror can be of help here) you should be able to see the eggs fairly plainly.

They are quite quick to hatch - ie little tails appear - but they shouldn't be offered any food until they are fully free-swimming and can be observed actually feeding off plants etc.
This should be between five to seven days from now.
BTW your male is now probably attending to/repairing his nest and repositioning any eggs which become dislodged.

Great news. Best of luck with them. Hopefully you'll get plenty of youngsters from the spawn. What type are the parents ?

Thanks for the info fellas... much appreciated..

The parents are just run of the mill Betta Splendens....

He is pure Crimson Red and She is Silver bodied with Pink fins...

This all happened by accident...They were just purchased on Friday and put in a small quarantine tank for now until I set up their proper home...And out of nowhere they just paired up and went for it lol........I had absolutely no intention of breeding them at all...........

Not at the moment....They are now in their permanent home along with some nano fish...

Will have to set up another tank for them which is not really an option at the moment....Space is running out with all the other tanks LOL...

But will definitely give it another go in the not too distant future....

Any tips for me Eric? Input on breeding Bettas is more than welcome for when i do get around to it...

You won't need much to breed them in. A small plastic tub will do if you can't get a small glass tank. You will need a decent sized grow out of 80l + to move them to.
If you do decide to give it a shot let me know and we can go throught he setup in more detail
