Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

just had a look in my tank to find that my koi angels have spawned on a leaf . now my tank is a community and not set up for breeding so reckon that the eggs would be eater tonight . so I have cut the leaf off and put it into a breeding trap suspended at the top off the tank . whats the chances of getting any fry this way? and how long to angel eggs take to hatch ?

Hard to say mate but make sure there is good flow running over the eggs

My angels breed every month, but get eaten within a few days. They become very territorial and aggressive towards anyone that gets near, so I am glad they don't last that long. They get eaten before injurys occurred
I did try cutting a leaf off once, but they go mouldy very quickly, and I had no success.
But good luck with yours.

so today set up a 10 gallon tank with tank water heater and sponge filter , moved the leaf with the eggs on it and mum and dad into the new set up and the parents promptly eat all the eggs ,I guess all the moving around just stressed them out to much . Now that I have a pair of breeding koi angels what do I need to do to the new set up and feeding wise to encourage them to spawn again, also how long might it be before they spawn again .

I think once they start it's hard to stop them Robert domestic Angels will readily breed and they don't need much encouragement.

I had zebra angels a few years ago and they always produced eggs I didn't have the room and they were in a community tank so I never tried to raise the eggs to fry.

I would suggest if you want to raise them leave the Angels in the 10 gallon and when lay eggs again put them back into the community tank and make sure you have a air stone near the eggs to keep a flow near the eggs.

Then when they hatch I pursume feed them freshly hatched brine shrimp not really 100% on that as I have never raised Angel fry.

Hope that helps

Regards
Craig

Thanks for your post , had a bit more time today so spent in on the breeding tank , put in a couple of plants and a breeding cone ,plus a air stone . Would really love to see the natural proccess so think if they do spawn again will probably leave the parents in the tank, hopefully to be able to watch them tending the eggs/fry . If you take the parents out think you are going down the line of a commercail breeder , not looking to make money rather get the enjoyment of watching the natural process . Was looking at a few utube vidoes seems that they can breed every 7 to 14 days so we will see .

Did a decent water change in my 10 gal that has a pair of koi angels in and turned up the temp to 28 deg c on tuesday night and have just noticed the spawning cone is covered in eggs. Going to leave theparents in the tank and see what happens hopefully they wont eat the eggs this time around . Do i need to treat the tank with an anti fungus treatment at half a normal dose ? Dont want to spook them this time .what do i need to do to feed the fry ?

Happy days :)..............Angels can be amazing parents if you get lucky with them...........don't be disheartened if they eat the eggs again, they will eventually get it right ok.......if the eggs don't get eaten and your leaving the parents in with the eggs then there is no real need for an anti-fungus treatment as the parents (the female in particular I found) with tend to the eggs brilliantly..........I use to use a small piece of polyfilter in fry tanks and I never had any problems with many deaths or deformities-missing gill plates etc. so I would defo recommend investing in a sheet of it (not the cheapest ok) if your going for it breeding wise................Methelyne blue is the bizz if your taking the parents out though ok........all the best dude :)

Baby brine shrimp is best for feeding fry and hatching your own BBS adds to the enjoyment........making your own hatchery is also very easy to do but crushed flake/pellets will be good enough for the fry if you don't want to go down the BBS route, but you don't need to hatch your own anyway, but it does add to the fun.

Just saw this on adverts.ie I,m assuming fish spawn on the cone and then you put in the cage so that they can still fan the eggs but cant get to them to eat..
p.s I think the mesh on the link looks like made from galvanise I would have thought a big no no,you could make one up in a tank safe plastic mesh.

I was hoping to go down the natural road , did a good water change in their tank tonight and turned the temp back down to 24 , so will leave it a couple of weeks then big water change and up the temp to28 as it seemed to induce spawning and hope third time lucky

Well 36hrs later and the eggs are gone, the eggs when laid were almost transparent and they then went white, is this normal ?. Just wondering if they were even a viable batch and if not was that the reason the eggs were eaten .
