Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Pleco L number breeding project

Later on this year I plan to invest in a group of zebra plecos and try breed them looks most likely I'll have to go over to England to get them.

So financially it won't be happening until later on in the year.

My question is to all the pleco lovers out there what plecos would be the best to break me into the breeding world of plecos until I buy my group of zebras later on in the year.

I have a red lizard whiptail l010 I am getting 2 more on Sunday then plan to get more when I'm home from Chicago.

Has anyone had any experience with spawning them.

And also if some one suggests another L number to try the red lizards are very peaceful so they will be ok in my planted tank if I try a different species.

Craig

As no-one has replied I'll give you a short rundown on my experiences with L-046s.
If you're buying juveniles be prepared for a long wait, they are really slow-growing (and even slower to become sexually mature) fish, at least that was my observation.
I had mine for over two years and never once witnessed any breeding behaviour.

Also, be wary of what you feed them - I was given some red granule food (I think it was JBL) and after feeding them this I lost two, almost losing more but thankfully rescued the others (I think I read that it is something to do with their short digestional tract).

If ever the opportunity arises whereby I can afford to keep them again I think I would go for an adult breeding pair - or breeding group even (must start doing the lottery).

Next time you're in Seahorse Aquariums try to speak to Darren about them - and other L-number fish, he is quite an authority on them.

L-333s and 134s are attractive ones - and, by comparison, relatively easy to get to breed.

Any other recommendations for Craig?

Also tetra colour plus and frozen bloodworm and brine shrimp.

Yeah I was looking at a breeding group on aquarists classified a U.K. Buy and sell for all things fishy a lot of people selling adult breeding groups the plan was to get the boat drive and collect them and get the boat home.

I'll have to research them L numbers you mention as my L number knowledge is quite limited lol

Thanks again for the reply John

That English website is great for fish stuff. It's so cheap compared to here. ( unless you add a boat ticket onto the price)
A tank of zebras would look fabulous to look at.

What would I look for?
I don't know much about pleco either, but knowing what strain you have is important. You see so many people selling baby plecos, and because the buyer brought them as babies didn't think they will grow 30cm long!!
If you want to sell babies later, and can be certain that the breeding stock isn't a cross that will grow massive, then go for it.

Hope that makes sense!
