Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Are there any purpose built breeding tanks? ie a tank specifically for breeding fish. With a way to filter the fry like the smaller breedin nets?

Sorry, but did you miss part of the wording out of this posting? It doesn't quite make sense - at least not to me.

Jim, are you looking for tanks just to raise fry, with a filter that will not suck them in?

If so the usual solution is air power filters. Of HMF filtration, which I can't remember what it stands for but is basically an end or corner of the tank separated by a large piece of filter fom, the kind used for pond filters. You create a partion using the foam and put your heater and power filter / powerhead behind the foam with the outlet on the tank side. The whole partition wall acts as the filter.

I have not tried this yet, but plan too. Need to check which type / pore size foam etc is best.

Hope that made sense.

@Daragh,

HMF for breeding tanks works best with fine filter foam pads. But you will need to get the size right. What size of tank are you planning on using?
BTW, it doens't need to sit in a corner but can also be the back or the side of the tank. You can also use two pieces of foam as a seperator in a bigger tank and have the heater and powerhead sitting between the two pads.

Do you think its a good idea having a photo of semi automatic machine gun under your name, especially with a Dundalk location, Ref Mudradondk side bar photo.

That would be a ecumenical matter!!!

Gonnna use a rekord 60 that i have spare. The book i have shows a tank with a v shape divider at one end of the tank to filter out the fry from the adults. I was wondering if it was a custom job or made by a manufacturer. I'd apprecaite it if other members could post pics of there breeding setups for live breeders and egg layers\scatterers

Ups, I think we got our wires crossed here.
For livebearers you should use one of those air operated spongefilters or HMF. Really makes no difference. Plenty of floating plants and some cambomba. This will allow the fry to hide. You will have to remove the female with a net.

You can pretty much get it in any Fishshop. Get Cabomba & Elodea. They are the best, especially Elodea as it grows so fast on the surface.

Also ask the shop for any spare bits that have broken away from the bunches too.

Smoke me a Kipper, I’ll be back for breakfast.
