Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Certainly looks like she is.
Looks like a female Labeotropheus Trewavasae, have one just like it myself that spat fry recently. Do you have a male Labeotropheus or has she cross bred?

Usually takes 3-4 weeks. Some fish will stop eating but others will still try & grab a mouthful when they can.
She looks like a fairly small fish so I wouldn't expect many fry - when my one was holding she only spat 3 fry.

If you have a seperate tank it would be good to stick her in now & let her spit naturally.
If you don't, then I would wait about 3 weeks then strip the fry.

You can keep the fry in a seperate tank or in a rigid plastic breeders trap in the main tank.
Don't buy one of the mesh breeders traps as the other cichlids will be able to crush the fry by attacking them through the mesh.

Good luck!!

Hi white tail acei,

There are articles on the forum which you can find in the \"Articles\" section on the left hand side menus on the forum. One is titled \"Stripping Malawi Fry\" written by Didihno. You might find it helpful ( www.irishfishkeepers.com/cms/content/view/62/30 ).

I think there are a few posts on the same subject on the forum which you will be able to find using the search functionality.

I hope this helps :-)

Valerie

Looks grand, just remember to remove any uneaten food if you are feeding her.
If she's in the tank by herself she will spit the fry naturally when she's ready so no need to strip them.

Once she spits them I'd give it a few days then put the fry into a breeding trap in case she decides to eat them.

Then give her a couple of days to rest up & eat before introducing her back into the main tank.

The colour could be from the eggs in her mouth. When they develop into fry & get bigger you will see eyes through the skin under the mouth etc. Funny looking.

With other cichlid species you can generally see the eggs/fry in the mouth by looking at the fish - different story with labeotropheus because of the underslung mouth.

Thats a shame....
Too difficult to predict what could have been the cause as there are so many factors...

I would just give her a few days of peace & quiet in the holding tank with a couple of feeds per day to get her strength back then put her back in the main tank & hope it works out next time..

shame the fry died, probably as the mother was a bit immature, as 2poc says give her a few days rest and see what happens, keep the isolation tank running though to build up the filter because once they start breeding it can happen very regularly

Fishkeeping the Only way to get wet and wild

currently 25 tanks, and breeding is the aim of everything i keep
