Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

I found eggs

As if my kribs fry wasn't enough, this morning i found 11 eggs stuck to the glass in my tank, I am assuming they are corydoras, I don't know if it is my pepper or the trillinateus, I hope it is not a mix of both (would that be possible?)
I am going to try and catch them and see will they hatch,
as usual any advice is welcome
Astrid

Possible, but still most unlikely. Of the two my guess (and it is only a guess) is that the Paleatus are the more likely culprits of the two.

I trust you have removed the eggs by now? - Otherwise they would most likely have become a tasty lunchtime treat for someone in your tank. But in case they are still there (and you left them) a good item to remove them (I personally use one) is a single-bladed safety razor blade. It's more sturdy than the double-edged one for one thing, but also it is safer to use, in that there is no "back" sharp edge to catch your fingers on. And...yet another "plus" is that there is no slot in the centre of the blade for the eggs to fall through as you are trying to collect them. You can also carefully collect the eggs in your fingers - they are quite strong things and as long as you exercise a degree of care you shouldn't burst any of them.

Daragh Owens did a quite good reply to someone enquiring about hatching Cory eggs some time back, it should still be there somewhere.

But in the meantime my suggestion would be to try to get water moving gently over the saved eggs (I often use a Net-type Breeding "trap" as this lets a small amount of water to exchange over the eggs).

When first they hatch (assuming them to be fertile - are they a nice amber colour as opposed to being a dull white?) you need do nothing...wait until the fry are free-swimming and there is no further sign of the egg-sac then start with freshly hatched brine shrimps (you'll be accustomed to doing this by now, I'd guess) then you can progress to larger foods as and when neccessary.

I expect Daragh will be along later with a far more comprehensive reply but this'll do for the time being.

John

ps, your second breeding "success" - you're well on the way to being "hooked" for life...
