Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

I have gotten a tank(thanks Mick) and have a breeding pair of Angelfish which I want to move into it but I want to get it setup right. the tank itself is a nice high Clearseal 2 foot tank.
1.Do i need to get an internal filter or just an air pump and a air stone ?
2.I have taken water from my existing tank to fill the breeding tank so do i need to cycle the tank ?

1.Either the filter or the airpump and sponge will do as long as you keep in top of water quality.

2.If you don't have a cycled sponge or filter you have really high chances that you will have an amonia crash. You might get away with it but you have to really keep a close eye on it.

1) i agree both filters will work fine but if you can seed it with media from your current live filter all the better
2) as Xeon said if it isnt cycled you may have problems seeding it should help but i'd still watch your parameters, this is one of the reasons i always have 2 filters on the go, if i do need to setup another tank i just fill it with water from my existing tank quickly switch over my spare filter and volia its live.... but i still watch the perameters for a week or two

The best thing to do would be to get an air driven sponge filter such as the Algarde BioFoam 200 (available in any decent lfs) or something similar(Fintastic Aquatics sells great weighted air driven filters) and leave it running in your main tank for a week. This will ensure that it is colonised by the necessary bacteria. Then after a week or so transfer the filter into your clearseal tank, ensuring it is at least half filled with water from the main tank.
From personal experience I think such a method works best as the filter is adequate to ensure the water quality remains good and also eliminates the danger of fry getting sucked into the filter. Also it reduces the stress levels on the parents.
Hope this helps, could be too late.
