Feeding adult Kribensis while they tend a new bree
×
Hi,
John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.
I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.
With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.
I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.
If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.
I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.
I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.
Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

My sons Kribensis have just bred in a community tank. Have removed most of the other occupants for the moment apart from some hatchet fish. The eggs have hatched and are clustered near the female in a cave. Just wondering do I continue to feed the adults? Or will this cause them to eat their young?
Have liquid fry and hatched brine shrimp for the new arrivals.

You can continue feeding the adults - normally Kribs are impeccable parents.
Don't worry about trying to feed the fry until they can be seen to actually swimming under their own 'steam'.
Then you can use newly-hatched brine shrimp from the off, they'll be able to manage that was a first food.
Good luck to your son - sounds like another 'addict' is among us.

Got a pair last week and they started to do a wiggle dance on Tuesday.
Female is noticibly thinner and huddled in a set of ruins, while the male swims around her area.
She only pops out and goes back in.
Am I about to be having babies? I can not get a good look at where she is settled, as there are too many leaves in the way and I do not want ot disturb her,

I would speculate that your tank stock level is about to become increased.

Normally the adults are very competent right from the 'off' so let them show you the 'way'...you won't really need to do much, the fry, once free-swimming will be able to eat newly hatched Brine Shrimp from the word 'go' if you have other Fish in the tank they will likely try to eat the fry but the parents will be more than capable of protecting against all but the most persistent predators.
Until...the adults change from their outright dedication, sometimes the parental 'desire' changes once the reproduction 'urge' takes over again - you will know when this is because they will start to reject the fry, even to the extent of eating them, in favour of a new lot of eggs - but don't worry yet about this happening - that's generally a fair way down the line.
One last thing, if you have any plecos or the like it would be as well to put a low-output lamp somewhere near the tank and leave it on overnight, this will allow the parents to see who is approaching the nest site, without that you might find that nocturnal feeders will have plundered the eggs during the night.
Hope that helps - can anyone add to this (please)?
