Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hi all
All u need is
1 - pair of adult angels (not necessarily same color variation)
2 - container at least 70-100l and 30cm high (not necessarily glass aquarium)
3 - mature sponge filter, heater, piece of slate or spawning cone
Water in the tank has to be soft 3-5n, pH 6,4-6,6 temperature 28-30 Celsius
pH value like this ensures microbiological stability of the water and eggs
should be fine without addition of any anti fungal treatment
feed your future parents well for a while(live and frozen diet)before moving into spawning container
after spawning u can leave parents and hope for the best, they will take care of the fry if u lucky
but there is no problem rising fry without parents around
the eggs will hatch after roughly 48 hours and remain attached to the substrate another 5-6 days and
they start to swim, now is the time to start feeding them
rotifers, brine shrimp, micro worms works for me perfectly (rotifers only first few days)
keep the tank clean - 20% water change daily, u can lower the temperature to 25 after 3 weeks
feed them well, chopped and rinsed tubifex or white worms are brilliant
4-5 weeks down the line you can start feeding some of the commercial dry foods
good luck

Fair play to you, the parents are lovely; I'm sure you'll have plenty of takers for the fry when the time comes

Little update
fish are around 4 cm long - the largest, they grow very unevenly
they are very greedy eaters and will devour anything
still i feed them mostly white worms and self prepared food
i separated them into few different tanks, size wise
30% water change every 2 days seems to be enough
the largest ones (photos) are already in hard tap water
it looks like it doesn't bother them at all

Great post and great pictures!

I always find posts like this dangerously inspiring, I had no plans on getting into angels but after seeing those pictures I have to fight the urge away.

Great posts there Bart but I've only one problem with them-you make it look very very easy. Fair play to you. I've about 10 free swimmers at the moment after trying a number of different tactics and I'm over the moon. If I can raise just a few it'll make me so happy.

Hi bart, I am thinking of doing something like this for my GBR's. I wouldn't think that I would need to change much. Just a couple of general questions - do you need a light for the "tank"? And are the plants advisable for cover etc or can you do without?

Well done Bart, great post and shows how simple and effective the filter and container can be for these breedings to occur. (The big jewel tanks etc arent always needed, simple is more effect.).

Great pics, and as you say wouldnt it be great if we could get a few more snaps of peoples fish breeding in tanks etc.

Pompey, for the GBR's dont worry too much re the light, natural light will be enough or indeed even a light in the room would be sufficient, indeed some fish actually prefer to do without bright lights when breeding (eg some tetras, the neon being one).
As for the plants, again not necessarily needed for the GBR's although you could put some in if you wish, they may even lay their eggs on the leaves on occassion. Main thing is to provide a flat piece of rock so the GBR's can lay the eggs.Get a pair firstly Pompeybill and then you can remove to breeding tank etc.

Gavin
Also make sure you have fry food at the ready eg:microworms, brine shrimp etc so that when they do lay eggs and hatch, then you are on track to raise etc.

Thanks Gav. Have a pair already, breeding now, twice in 3 weeeks. But its in a community tank so don't stand a chance. They get to wriggler stage and despite the parents doing their very best, they don't make it.

As for food I was going to go with Infusoria for the first few days then BBS as its what I can get my hands on at the moment. Does that sound like a decent plan? Am planning to get a microworm culture going in the next couple of months but not at the moment.

Sorry pompeyBill i'm a bit late with answer, didn't look in here for a while
Gavin did the good job though :) thanks

The main thing with the plants is that they are already covered with all kinds of infusoria and fry can feed on them immediately. I always include plant in breeding tank.
As for the light i usually use cheap led light bar 24h fro first week, it allows parents to have control over fry all the time, it was recommended in many books and breeding reports as well as i heard it from professional breeders i had chance to talk to

If u want i can post u microworms starter culture

cheers

Id remove the GBR parents from the fry if I was you Bill once they reach free swimming stage. they wont resist the urge alot of the time not to eat their own.

Thanks for the replies guys. I will give it a go without the parents first, then maybe try it with them if I can't mange

Bart I may well take you up on that, thank you for the kind offer. I am going to give BBS a go this week, so if I manage to get them to live I will give the microworms a go! Will PM you later this week. Really looking forward to giving this a go now.

They spawned again in the main community tank, they hatched and are wrigglers at the moment, but like last time can't see them lasting pass this stage.
