Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

GBR Fry Help

So have just noticed in my tank that I have some GBR fry! They spawned a few days ago but thought that they would just eat the eggs, but apparently they did not! They are bring model parents looking after the fry, catching them in their mouths if they wander out of the nest, and chasing away any of the other fish.

Now I know there is not much chance of them surviving in a community tank, but is there anything I can do to help them along? I just don't have the facilities for another tank or anything. Is there anything I can feed them? I don't have any live food cultures or anything like that, only NLS fish food at the moment. Would grinding up some of that and spot feeding into the area where they are be any good? This is my first ever time anything has spawned so loving it, but am totally clueless as to what to do! :)

Firstly Bill,
good news that the have spawned - things have to be 'pretty right' if you have fry.
However - on a more dismal (but realistic) note - as you say there isn't a huge chance of any surviving in a community tank, but that shouldn't mean you ought not try.
Grind up some of your food, if you have a mortar and pestle in the kitchen and no-one's looking use that.
Then try feeding the fry with it - this might be easier said than done as all the others will immediately recognise the fine powder as being food and set about eating it too, the parents might have trouble keeping them at bay and fry will likely go the same way as the powder.
You might try a 'breeding net' if you can get hold of one then do your best to catch as many fry as possible and transfer them into it but I have to warn you to expect the worst and - if at all possible - try to set up a small tank in readiness for the next time they start to get ready...
Good luck all the same,

John

Yeah expected as much John. I might go down the route that Bart suggests in his Angels thread and get a storage box, sponge filter and heater for future spawns - oh and convince the girlfriend as well!! :)

What are you water parameters out of interest?
Get some microworms off ebay, shoudnt take that long to get,set up a culture for future spawns.
Also get some Java moss and it will give the fry a chance to hide amongst it etc, gives them more of a chance to survive in a community setting.
Oh and well done on the spawn.

Thanks Gav. Not sure of the parameters to be honest, I am just keeping up the weekly water changes and only test if I see any issues. Do Microworms get stinky? Its just that I live in an apartment so any smells are a no no! :)

Nah, they dont get stinky. You should check the water parameters to just keep a record of what the fish did breed at!

Just out of interest Gavin,
How do you keep and breed your micro worms without any 'aroma'?
:-((
