Disaster strikes, paint does not agree with plecos
×
Hi,
John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.
I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.
With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.
I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.
If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.
I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.
I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.
Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hi all,
Disaster struck this week. I see this as a reminder to make sure everyone that comes near your fish knows what to and what not to do.
At the moment I am working away from home (the reason that I’m not really active on the forum). I am only home during the weekends and when coming home I found out that our landlord had painted the inside of the house, without letting us know in advance.
He did this as a favour but as I was unaware of it I did not warn him about the fish tanks. I would never have done this myself but feel so stupid for not having told him. One sentence would have saved me so much grief.
I lost 2 Peckoltia compta, one Hypancistrus sp. one large Ancistrus and about ten smaller fish. After many, water changes it seems that the survivors have started to gain strength again.
The tanks are open topped and I’m 99% certain the paint did it, there was even traces, like a film on the surface.
Like said, the lesson is to let everyone that could go in to your house know about your loved ones.

sorry to hear that, if that happened to me i would be seriously p***ed off,
a landlord has no right to come into your house without your permission or without giving you notice before hand, even if it is to do work,
if my landlord done that to me i would go looking for compensation for the fish that were killed,
its annoying to lose fish like that when you have kept them for so long,

Thanks dyco, I am seriously p***ed off alright.
If it was any other landlord i would demand compensation. In this case however we have become veru much like friends and he has done allot for us in the past that he would not have to do(that would have cost him).
I have informed him about what happend and not do anything like that again without calling me first. I think it is very hard for a non fishkeeper to realise how hard it is to aquire many of these species and how much effort and time is put in to getting them in breeding condition etc.

Omg that's an nightmare what are the things you can do to stop this happening other than covering the tank and opening a window?
If there is any

Easylife Fluid Filter media is brilliant for removing toxins from water, it's practically instant.
