Crystal Clear Aquarium Water
×
Hi,
John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.
I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.
With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.
I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.
If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.
I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.
I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.
Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hi guys .
Any advice on how to achieve crystal clear water in my aquarium.
I have a 5 foot Clearseal which came with a black background.
The black background is great for highlighting the fish colours and contents but it also shows any fine suspended matter in the water.
I am using two external filters in the 380Ltr tank, L CristalProfi e501i and e900.
I have recently introduced JBL Carbomec activ to clear any discolouarion from the water (it was a bit yellow).
I suspect that my problem is down to the fact that the filter material is not fine enough to remove all suspended matter from the water. I do not want to reduce the throughput of my filters by adding a filter material that is not supplied for the product.
I am now thinklig of adding an internal filter (more expense) and just filling it with fine filter wool to achieve the crystal clear water I want .The filter wool could then be occasionally replaced.
Any advice on what to do would be much appreciated.
Greg

Greg,
Filter Floss, anywhere in the Filter will remove the particulates and in my History of Fishkeeping it doesn't damage or render the Filter negatively in any way, you just watch the return from the Filter to indicate when it's getting clogged then replace it, you can also use Easylife Fluid Filter Medium, it really helps to remove the suspended material.

Thanks Kev,
I will get some filter floss and try that in my current external filter.
I am reluctant to put another fluid such as Easilife in the tank. I am already use Tetra Aquasafe for water changes and using Easilife Ferro for the plants.

Iv used easylife filter fluid before and its pretty amazing!
When you run out of Tetra aquasafe you could always give the filter fluid a go instead.

Kev/Alan,
I've just bought a tub of Filter floss from the LFS.
I assume it goes in the top container of an external filter or should I place some on top of each of the 3 trays in the filter for better effect?

Depends on the direction of flow of the canister, I made a mistake saying top as this suits mine but maybe not yours.... next time, search your House for an old Duvet!!! same stuff inside it... but make sure it hasn't been Dry cleaned or washed,I use the old Duvet all the time and to date.. no issues.

Like kev said depends on the lay out of ur external....
Ive always used pillows again same stuff but you have to be carefull as pillows and duvets have fire retardent agents in them.
Now ive never had any issue using them and never heard of someone how has. Pillow in dunnes or penny 3 euro at it will last ages.

totally agree with the lads
never tried using pillows or duvets myself but sounds good
I use JBL Symec most of the time, the big pack (500g) lasts for ages
easylife liquid filter is a great product aswell
used it a few times
if you had a couple of quid to spare, i'd recommend a uv steriliser
might not be a necessity but they do work really well
i have one on my 600 litre and the water is always crystal clear
i haven't had to clean algae from that tank ever since adding the steriliser, over two years...
