Return of algae grrrrr
×
Hi,
John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.
I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.
With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.
I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.
If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.
I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.
I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.
Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hi all,
I have white / grey hair algae growing on my larger plants around the mid to top of my tank. Can't seem to shift it what so ever. I've cut the time I have the lights on to 4hrs and I'm only using 1 T5 and have been doing this for 10 days and nothing it's actually getting worse.
I've cut back on feeding also. Tank doesn't get any natural light on it and during the day I have it covered. I do 20% water change every 10 days or so and water readings never change.
How do I get rid of this horrid sh&t.... I've cut back some plants cleaned them. Changed the active carbon media in the filters and still it grows. I'm starting to think a nuke wouldn't stop this stuff.
The tank is up and running since march / April time went through the usual start up stuff
Anyone any idea what this stuff is and how I shift it...?
Alan

You could try overdosing with Easycarbo, just don’t overdo it

approx 2 to 2.5 times the recommended dose for a week or so should help clear it up. It sounds counter intuitive but it works.
Typically you get problems with algae when you get a significant imbalance in the ratio of phosphates to nitrates in the tank. So would recommend getting your water tested at the LFS for phosphates, if they are off the charts, then you need to look into the source and work on eliminating / managing that as much as possible. Given the light levels and lighting period on your tank, phosphates are the most likely cause.
Cheers,
Bill.
