Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Anyone using polyfilter? I seen some in the lfs yesterday and it's quite expensive, need to find out how long would it lasts and is there pros and cons before I purchase for my 180 freshwater community tank! Any feed back would be great.

I don't use it myself but many, many people here do use it and swear by it.

Hopefully some of them will come by presently and tell you more about it.

One of the best little helpers to Fishkeepers. How long it lasts is totally depedant upon how effective your Filter is and upon what media you use in it. It will remove medications and dangerous metals like Copper, a metal dangerous where Inverts etc are concerned.
It has the added bonus of changing from white through to black, Black indicating it needs to be replaced.

It is wonderful for emergency use ie. where Ammonia has built up suddenly , in fry Tanks and Shrimp setups, my Fish First aid kit ALWAYS contains one or two sheets of Polyfilter.

Thanks Kev,I haven't had any breakouts yet but put a couple of squares back to back in the middle compartment of my fluval u3, with this and the two sponges rapped in fillterfloss just to keep on top of water quality wouldn't do any harm?

Havent used it myself so i could be very wrong here so if i am Kev please say

I i am to believe about polyfilter is that is great for breakouts and Ammonia spikes and every time i have seen it used have just to out into the main tank for a while where you can see it so when its black you cant take it out.

But if you have it in a filter would it not be hard to tell when its black and needs to be taken out before it start to leach back into the water?

Again i could me very wrong about this but this is my understanding off polyfilter,

Im sure if you really wanted to keep an eye on it and change it regularly then that would work but would be using a lot off it.

So back to Kev to tell me i am wrong

I used around an 1/8 of a sheet yesterday just to see if it made any difference, have to say I have good clarity at the best of times but the water was crystal this morning, clearer than usual. So I'm pretty sure it's doing a good job.

Hi Sean,

It won't leach back into the Water and as far as keeping an Eye on it to see when it is fully used up, it doesn't have to be placed in any Filter, it will happily work away tucked behind decor etc where there is a good flow of water and is ideal for fry Tanks, it isn't just useful for emergencies, it should just be left to work away in the background, it is a great visual indication of the condition of your water and I presume it will also help to biologically help remove other baddies in the Tank, I bought 20 of the largest sheets before I left crappertoni Land.

I use it in fry tanks.....Just before free swimming i cut a piece off and just float it on the surface as that's when i would do a fairly big water change....after a day or two it sinks and if it's an eyesore i just wedge it under or beside something in the tank.....Always feel safe when i put it in,just a pity about the price!!!

I guessed, since Trappatoni is having such miserable luck with the Irish games I'd give him a new name, hence crappertoni....

I think I paid €15 or thereabouts.

Kev,
Last time I looked a very large sheet of Polyfilter cost 80 euro each
Normal size sheet is around 20 euro.

You must have some contact to get the rate mentioned and for 20 large sheets .
