Fish in cycle advice

Hi,
John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.
I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.
With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.
I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.
If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.
I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.
I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.
Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hi
Did the filter also come with the tank and if so how long was it not running? Did you get lots of water from the tank or just enough to carry the fish?

the filter came with the tank and it was only turned off for about two hours that included time from kilkenny to tullamore + setup i had the filter in a bag of two ltr of water from the tank, and there was about the same in the bottom of the tank. i didnt add the fish for a hours after setup. tank was at the right temp and the water was looking ok.

Oh I see SSS's tank. I'm no expert but if the filter was not out of water too long the bacteria colony should be ok if you got a good lot of water fish should be OK.
Light feeding and regular testing for a few days.
Perhaps some more experience will happen along and confirm or expand
Enjoy the new tank

Yes i got the tank and a load of stuff from Ssss very happy and the kids love this tank and the fish playing in and out through the rocks. i was going to do 10 to 20% water change each night for a few nights would this be to much and i will get test results up later tonight when i am home.

Small water changes are a good idea. No need to post test results just keep an eye on them in case of any spikes. The filter being in water the whole time should be very helpful in keeping levels at zero

The stocking levels are quite low I see, and unless the tank is a margarine tub, I would say that careful feeding and your water changes in the first week will see your tank ok.
If there has been a large die-off bacteria, then there still be some in the filter to quickly seed the filter again.
What I would recommend, though, is to give the filters a reasonable squeeze in some tank water (removed when doing a water change) so that you slough-off dead colonies and help prevent toxin from any dead colonies going back into the tank.
If, though, the bacterial colonies had died "big-time" and released toxins from that die-off, then you'd have known about that pretty quickly already. So....my guess would be that all if OK.
