Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

thanks a lot ger i was affraid until now to use the fagus sylvatica leaves in my shrimp tank as i thought they might be toxic. i would rather use leaves from my garden than ones who have to be imported from the other side of the world.

I've used beech leaves a few times and I find them really good. They last a long time (longer than oak or laurel leave which, counter intuitively, feel much tougher and less papery than beech), are easily available and are great for making blackwater extract. I'm going to be using Alder cones in the next while. Like almond leaves, they seem to be hailed as a natural kind of wonder product

Yeh cheers lads,it's a decent read alright.

@LemonJelly.....i've being using Alder cones for the past 6/8 months and i can't say i've noticed much benefit from them but Almond leaf on the other hand i find great....I don't know if you have used Almond bark before but i thinks it's the bizz aswell....when i started putting a small bit of it in a fry tank from the off,my survival rate soared, and i used polyfilter before using it so it's doing something good.
I'm using teak leaves more and more now mostly because of there toughness but it looks like Beech leaves are now on my radar so cheers.

Sorry for the late reply,
if your going to use Almond bark be careful with the dosage as it's much more potent than the leaves (5/6 time stronger i think i read).....I've read of people who thought the opposite because the size of the leaf compared to a small sliver of bark and, well you can guess what happened next!
Roiboos tea is something i know i used in the past or maybe i was just given some and never used it,not sure, but it's a name i haven't heard in a while so cheers,i'll have a look at it later after work :)

i use to collect beech leaves and alder cones locally for my apisto's when i had them. at the time i use to just pile them in till they were a couple of inches deep so it would have been pointless removing dying leaves... i left them in to deteriorate naturally and regenerate as needed. they loved it and it worked great for them. the only thing was feeding because i was feeding whiteworms at the time but they seemed to come out for feeding and find food fine (i wouldn't use frozen food or processed foods with this method because you can't hoover the bottom easy and the whiteworms seem to stay live alot longer that ye might think). never had a problem with water quality even if i let the water go before a big water change... was an interesting project.

after i get rid of my convicts and fry (HA!) i'm doing up a ram tank. think i might use alder cones, if only for ease of cleaning compared to leaves. i used beech and laurel leaves in a previous tank and though the parameters were good and the colour of the water lovely, once they broke up the amount of crap in the tank was unbelievable :-((
