Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Bad Things seem to happen all at once :(

Did my weekly water change on Saturday, then realised Sunday Morning that i didn't plug the heater back in! :( Temperature was down from 24-19C ... I was wondering why the fish seemed lethargic, checked the thermometer and realised what a stupid mistake I'd made! :(

So... after getting over that scare, bringing the temp back up gradually, this morning I got up and my Danios and Cherry Barbs were all swimming right at the surface breathing really quickly... I hadn't a clue what was wrong! Noticed my gouramis were fine (breathing water from the surface) so i thought it must be a lack of oxygen?

Checked my internal filter and the little tube that goes from the surface to the head of the pump was cracked so there were no bubbles being pumped out into the water like usual? I have my filter quite low so there's not much surface agitation... It was working fine with the tube diffusing oxygen :(

Not sure how long it's been broken and why i didn't cop onto it :( But i presume the oxygen levels have just been dropping constantly for a while now for it to have an effect like that?

I fixed it with a bit of airline tubing. The fish have moved back down in the water but all still breathing rapidly... Not fun :(

I have done this before many times.I think that you will be ok if the fish have gone from the surface you stand a good chance you may lose a few fish but hopefully all will recover.

For Danios and Cherry Barbs, the drop in temp from 24 to 19 is not going do them much harm (unless it was a very sudden drop).

As the temperature drops there will be a tendency for the oxygen levels to increase in the water.

But, it is not the oxygen that is a concern with a filter not working.....it is the fact that the filter isn't working on its biological action that would be a concern.

Replied by Wackoo (Niall) on topic Not going good :(
On my tank i have a doubled over black towel on the hood, I find this really helps with keeping the temp constant, i've noticed the heater isn't on as much (it also works as a nice black background :P) so i don't think the drop was very sudden as the tank is semi-insulated

Should i clean the filter?

Cheers

Gently wash it in a tub of aquarium water (not tap water).

Do not feed the fish for a day, and then only feed a small amount for the next few days. That is as a safety precaution in case the activity of the filter has died off a bit.
