Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

BBA / Black Beard Alge - How I am removing

Thought i'd share what i've tried and what seems to work, to help others in removing this presky alge.

(tank is 80 liters, with about 20 small fish)

At first i wasnt to sure what it was untill i looked closer and google it.
This is what it looked like

First thing i did was get some "AlgeExit", this didnt kill the alge - yet (still going on the treatment)
but it did stop all the spores flying around.

I know this becasue before i used it, there was a ton of new BBA on my breading net - today there is Zero! (1 weeks after i boilded the net and removed the exisitng BBA)

So step one is to stop the spores

Next thing i did was to tackle the the existing alge.
Anything that could be boiled - i boilded (decore, etc...),
Anything that could be replaced - was replaced (filter media etc..)

I got myslef 4 oto's (Otocinclus Catfish)- they dont fully eat BBA but they do eat some and keep leaves clean to help prevent futher infection.

On the plants side, any leaves that where invected where cut! This takes a long time.
But not everyting can be cut, steams etc...

I got tired of cutting so i thought i try something new.

3 cups.

1 with 20-1 bleach
1 with 40-1 warm water and (watever water safe treatment you use)
1 with warm water

1) Take out the plant,
2) dip it in the bleach for 20 seconds. (try to avoid dipping the roots)
3) run it under a gental tap for about 30-40 seconds - removes most of the bleach
4) Swirl it in the warm water cup for 30-40 seconds - removes more of the bleach
5) Swirl it in the water treated cup for 30-40 seconds - removes the last of the bleach
6) dry it as much as you can in a paper towel
7) finaly have a sniff to see if you can smell bleach - if you can - repeat steps 3-7.

Note: Replace the warm water every few plants,
Note: Dont to too many a day incase you intorduce a small potion of bleach to the tank each time, (give it a day to evaporate)

This is what is working for me at the moment. It might not work for you, but you can seethe alge has gone white, aka dead.
Some of the plant leaves will follow but the plant is still alive and will recover.

I've also started some easycarbo treatment to help the plants recover.

I'll keep you all posted :)

Very impressive account of dealing with algae, but not as impressive as that lovely big clown loach you have.
