Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Fan Shrimp was created by Didihno (Didihno)
I bought two fan (Bamboo) shrimp a month ago and one has been missing for a few days now.
Now these guys are hard to spot at the best of times and are great little creatures to watch when you do eventually spot them.
Last night I found a complete shell.
Like totally complete, legs and all.
I'm wondering if the other shrimp has shed its shell and is hiding out till the new one hardens. If one dies and the fish have at it, won't they destroy the shell in the process?
There was no meat at all inside the shell, not even in the legs and I doubt any of my fish or snails could have stripped it so thoroughly without causeing some sort of damage.

Any ideas on this folks?

Im guessing here but if it shed its shell it would have grown a complete new shell underneath before sheeding the old one.

I had a lobster that shed its shell back in july.Like your shrimp,it was a complete shell,no meat of course. However it died very shortly after. When I removed the body from the tank it was very soft,I just figured that it weakened the poor creature.I admit, though, that I had neglected the tank maintenance, and it was well over a week since I'd done a water change.
Heres hoping your wee fella is just hiding out till his new shell hardens up.
Keep us posted.

always on the lookout for interesting corys.pm me if you know off any!

I bought two large Bammboo shrimp some time ago, the first guy shed his shell with no problems, he did hide out for a while to allow it harden. When it was the second guys turn, he was not so lucky, I found the discarded shell, but it had a fresh leg in it! He must have pulled himself out of the old shell a bit too hard :-( It was his large front leg, but he hardened up and was soon back in place fanning away, unfortunately he died about a month later for no reason I could find. His partner joined him yesterday, I could find no reason for his demise either. y only thought s that I bought 2 oother bamboo shrimp first and they are only half the size, so maybe the first two were old and died of natural causes.

I reckon yours will appear in a shiny new shell soon enough, look around the quiet spots in the tank, rather than in the areas where there is high water flow where they usually hang out.

Yep.
This evening when I got home they they were, front and centre.
One looking bigger and like he got a new coat of paint!!!
I had a gut feeling (and its a pretty big gut) that this was the case, glad I was right.
I will keep an eye on them though, just in case.
Thanks all!
