Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

I have 4 Pristella Tetra in a community tank since Jan. 2007, this pm I noticesd that one is bloated , a lighter colour than the others , the scales look jagged and it has three patches of \"wool\" on one side of the body plus its mouth is constantly going as it swims about. The wool looks like fine cotton wool ( wooly aphid for gardners) .
I did a water change yesterday and cleaned the glass and cut back plants and moved a plant , I have not checked the water parameters yet.
I will post a photo if I can master the technology.

Hi,

Thanks for posting such good photographs as it makes diagnosis much easier. It looks like dropsy which is a catch-all term to describe bloating. The wool is a fungal infection which is probably secondary as the fish's immune system breaks down.

In my experience, once a fish bloats it signifies serious organ damage and I have yet to see a fish recover from such an illness. The cause could be several factors including a bacterial infection (most likely), viral or an obstruction.

I would recommend that you quarantine this fish as soon as possible in case it's contageous. If you do want to try treating, I would recommend eSHa 2000 which is a broad range treatment. Broad range treatments are useful when you're not sure what you're treating.

In this case, I would seriously consider euthanasia. Sorry I can't be more positive, but as I said, it's almost impossible to treat a fish that has reached this stage.

Regards,

Ken.

Hi pjq,

I wouldn't hold too much hope for this poor little fellow ... I think that it might be better to send him to fish-heaven in this particular case as he seems to be very poorly... :(
If you were to try and save him, do quarantine him as it might be contagious. Also, if you place this fish in a smaller tank, you would have less water volume to treat.

In any case, keep a very close eye on his tank mates, just in case ;)

Valerie

Thanks Guys,

As soon as I googled Dropsy , most of the symptoms appeared , I had been looking for \"wooly\" .
The fish got overfed during my absence in August and I have imposed a diet since then , the fish are (were?) livlier and the water cleaner . One of the causes of Dropsy may be malnutrition !
OK , I'll do the business at dawn .

You should also check your water parameters as poor quality water can trigger dropsy. Over feeding wouldn't have done him any favours either. If the other fish still look fine than chances are that they'll be ok.

Ken.

Hi,

Look at your water quality ASAP....in my experience poor water quality is a regular contributing factor in the development of dropsy....(unfortunately all the symtoms would indicate this condition)

How many fish in total do you have in the tank? There is a population density calculator on pfk website if you need assistance on what is the optimum stocking density for whatever size tank you have got.
