Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Ph. was created by Avonmore (Pat Cullen)
Hi

When I started setting up my tank at Xmas I had a Ph. of 7.8. Its steadily lowered to 6.8 Is this ok. I've checked my tap water that I use for water changes and its 6.0 Is that going to create a problem when I add some plants as I believe that they will lower it even more?
I'm going to the west this weekend and was thinking of picking up a small bit of the local lime stone and add it to the tank. Will that raise the Ph or cause damage?

Ammonia 0
Nitrite 1.0
Nitrate 10

Hi Pat,

Your bogwood would have a downward influence on your pH. The fact there has been much rain in the recent past would probably affect it. If you do a partial water change (20% maybe), you should be ok. In any case, you need to change some water promptly : your nitrite rate should be zero.
Limestone would both harden your water and increase your pH. Whether you add it to your tank really depends on the type of fish you want to put in your tank...
If you add anything to your tank, make sure you boild it a while. :-)

I hope this helps.
Kindest regards,
Valerie

Thanks Valerie

I have been doing the water changes as the tank is still cycling and the number are dropping all the time. But by doing water changes with my tap water will it not drop my ph as the tap water has a ph of 6.0?

Hi Pat,
Have to agree with Valerie. but keep an eye on your stock for now. That they are not stressing I would wait a little longer before adding stock allow this to settle. i would hold of on the lime stone for the same reason.

there is a thing called PH shock when you add stock from a different PH they will die quite easily from this it may happen slowly or quite fast but must always be considered.

I am not sure of the figures but a PH of 6 is a hundred times a pH of 5 don't understand it my self but explains the importance of knowing this.

Pat your parameters are looking good coming down nicely. how did the algae bloom work out

Thanls for the advise Mickey, Yes the bloom is sorted. I've no intentions of adding any fish yet, not until things settle down. Been doing water changes twice a week and test the water before each change. Gettin a bit of algae on the glass but other than that, things look ok

Are you doing a fishless cycle? If so, there's no need to do water changes.

Regards,

Ken.

No Ken, There was a few goldfish thrown in with the tank, so never one to look a gift horse in the mouth, I took them. I was sorry i did for a while but now glad that they are in my tank as I've learned a lot about water quailty and feeding of fish. I had white spot soon after is was started, I now know how to spot it, treat it etc. The Goldies are hardy enough to forgive my little errors that less hardy fish might not tolerate. Its taking longer that a fishless cycle but I think I've learned a lot since I set it up. Anyway I'm in no hurry to get the finished tank. Mickey gave me some great advise, Add one type of thing at a time and wait for 2 weeks before adding somthing else. Checking the water all the time. This way it will be easy to isolate a problem if it occurs. So if it takes a few months to set up, so be it. But I'm learning all the way.

a few seashells in the filter or as ornaments in the tank will also harden your water and keep the ph more stable. I have really soft water and the ph dips every now and then causing problems. I find the shells work well
