Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)
Hi,
John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.
I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.
With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.
I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.
If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.
I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.
I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.
Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

(smithfield)
it comes from ballymore eustace treatment plant
its treated with alluminium sulphate the max allowed is 0.2ppm
its
alluminium sulphate 0.1-0.2 ppm
chlorine 0.5 ppm
amonia 0.1 ppm
flouride 0.8-1 ppm
he said they dont add chloramine but it makes itself with the mix of amonia and chlorine. he said they dont measure it but the total chlorine amount takes it into account (0.5ppm)
its passed through poly acrylamite (not sure on spelling), sand, and then lime is added to brìng the ph to neutral or slighty above.

I'm in Coolock, my Ph from the Tap is 7.2, in my parents house (up the road in Artane its 6.8 ).
Smoke me a Kipper, I’ll be back for breakfast.

You are intitled to this through the freedom of information act.
But this dosent mean they will give you the info you want and you can expect a bit of a runaround.
If you do get anymore info will you post it here. I would do it myself but they HATE me
Cheers, platty.

Yep.I live in Donabate and my PH is 7.8 with GH of 180. My parents live in Coolock and their GH is 80. I believe Balbriggan is nearly off the scale when it comes to water hardness.
I moved there last year, our water, well, you could stand a spoon in it.
I rang FCC to get it tested and got the runaround from the guy, basically quoting Legislation to me saying that they don't have to do anything about hardness!!! I'm going to test my water now.
Is hardness a fish killer?

Is hardness a fish killer?
Yes, potentially. It will seriously stress fish that need soft water so you need to choose your fish carefully.
You could soften your water, but you need to ensure that it remains stable. It's better to match your fish to your water than vice-versa.
Regards,
Ken.
