Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Whitespot question!

Hi folks!

I have recently bought a shoal of 13 small fish for my planted tank. They have been in the tank for two days and today I noticed that they have started to develop a few white spots. Now, I have controlled whitespot in the past using Interpet, No. 6 (Anti White spot treatment), salt and an initial large water change. My only concern is that the interpet medication might cause problems with my shrimp in the tank. Although there is nothing in the booklet that comes with the medication, does anyone know if its safe to use with shrimp. Should I remove the fish from the tank and then treat or should I treat the entire lot?

Cheers folks,

Denis

Not sure Denis, but I don't think the salt would do the plants any good at all if left in there for any period of time, they might melt on you. Probably best to remove the fish altogether to another tank.

Thanks Peter for the advice. I might treat the entire tank without the addition of salt as I don't think I will be able to fish out all the ottos and hence the tank will still contain a source of contaminants. I was only adding the salt to help gill activity and fish respiration. Since the infection is still only minor the salt should not really be required. But I'd still like peoples advice on the use of the meds with shrimp?

Cheers

Denis

plus can anyone give me a positive ID on the above fish.

Hello again Denis,

This issue of Fish treatments being suitable for use in aquariums containing Shrimps is a bit of a thorny one...Shrimps being invertebrates may quite likely not be affected by Fish diseases, but that's not to say they coundn't carry them around with them, as such you might want to consider taking them out for the duration of the treatment - especially as the recommendation is to increase the temperature to speed up the metabolism of the disease pathogens. I'm really not too certain whether the Shrimps would take too kindly towards a spell in the low thirties so it might be as well to be on the safe side here. Hopefully someone with more knowledge/experience with Shrimps could advise you better - mine is only a 'hunch'. I do note, however, that other Whitespot treatment manufacturers suggest a half-dose for scaleless fish...this also might be worth considering too in the light of the fact that just about all of the whitespot treatments are based on the same ingredients, perhaps with subtle changes in percentages.

To your fish, I waited for the pictures to download (never a short process with my unbelievably slow dial-up connection - they kind of look like Barbus (or whatever Barbus are now called) Pentazona but are somewhat deeper in the body. This could just be that these could be from the wild or Pentazona from either a different river or just a regional variation. Just at the moment quite a lot of new discoveries - especially Danios, but also other small shoaling species - are finding their way onto the market and yours could be one falling into that category but I think if you take them as Pentazona-types you'll not be too far away.

Hope that helps a bit.

John

Howdy, I have 7 Ammano shrimp in both my trop tanks and recently had to treat for whitespot on two new Tiger barbs. I used King British WS3 White Spot Terminator and all the shrimps survived. Interestingly at the next gravel clean I found a lot of dead snails who had prob come in on the plants and were hiding in the substrate. No more pesky snails since! Good luck with your fish and love the tank, nice carpet of plants. M.

Thanks folks for the advice and identification. I treated the tank last night with the Anti-white spot meds. This included all the occupants! I tried to get the fish out but as soon as the net went in the fish went to \"grass\". There was no way I was getting them out without damaging the fish, crushing a few shrimp or mowing the lawn completely. I've also increased the temp slightly, turned off the co2 (the bottle is empty anyway), reduced the lighting over the tank by half and the spray bar is causing lots of surface agitation. Hopefully this will fix the problem and not have any long term effects on the shrimp.

I will let you know how is goes.

Regards

Denis
