Royal plecs and water temp
×
Hi,
John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.
I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.
With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.
I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.
If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.
I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.
I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.
Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

My Royal Plec is lying on his side on the gravel, breathing quite quickly and not interested in moving. I reduced the temperature in the tank yesterday as it was quite hot....from 28 down to 25 deg.
I also increased the co2 slightly.
All the other fish are behaving normally, including the clown plec and the BN.
I've no hospital tank to move him to so I reduced the co2 a little and turned the airstone up to the max.
Any ideas. He hasn't lost his color and his fins aren't clamped..... I'm not sure what else I can do?

Sounds to me like an aeration issue.
Bigger fish are more affected by lack of oxygen than smaller ones which is probably why the others are Ok.
I have seen this same behaviour in cichlids after a pump failure myself.
Some even lying on their side.
Luckily enough they recovered once I got lots of air into the tank.
Turning the airstone up to the max is the right thing to do alright.
Good luck!
Patrick.

Have you moved the fish to Galway yet? IT might be to do with the stress, otherwise most likely lack of oxygen. Do a water change. They prefer temps fairly high but I don't think a drop to 25 would have anything to do with the way he is now. The drop in temp would also increase the oxygen content of the water - have you done anything else in the tank lately?

On the plus side..... he seems to have recovered. When I got back from work he was off the bottom and just about hanging on the glass but breathing normally.
Now he's back in his usual hideout.
I suspect aeration. The fish haven't been moved yet so there was no trauma like that! I've turned the CO2 back up a little to avoid an algae farm but i've left the airstone on full.
Thanks for the advice, lads.
Only thing is, I don't think he'll be too happy with the new tank at 30 ppm CO2 and no airstone.

Sounds like lack of oxygen and to much Co2.
I dont think he will do well in your planted tank with the bright light and the amount of Co2.
Has he been in a tank before were Co2 was used?

Ah yeah, the tank he's in now has pressurised CO2, he's been happy enough for the last 2 years.
I'll try him in the new tank, i'm sure someone would be happy to re-home him later!

I do indeed, I seem to remember throwing a tantrum because I wanted two goats that were advertised in the paper as free to a good home.
Two goats, in a 3 bed semi, in deepest darkest Blanchardstown.
We'll see indeed.
I never got my damn goats.

Since I've grown up, matured & started earning a few quid I've also learned to overcompensate.
So now along with my flock of goats I'm also going to buy a dozen royal plecos!
