Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

:( Another one bites the dust. Just lost my second redline barb in about 10 days. tested water and again its fine . no ammonia, nitrites, nitrates between 5 and 10, ph about 7.0 - 7.2. oxygen seems fine , temp 24.5. happened after feeding AGAIN. this time they had flakes. Think ill get someone else to feed them in future :S Just hate not finding an obvious cause. wondering are they bashing in to one another . they are like lunatics when they feed, am trying to spread the food out a bit over the tank so that their not all on top of one another. am just being stupid now i know. just have to accept it i suppose, but im still mad as hell now  :(by the way, when first one died he lay on bottom of tank, this one floated on surface does that mean anything?

That is very unfortunate. It can be a right pain when you don't know why they are dieing.
Watch out for individuals hiding away from the rest of the barbs. Check for cloudy eyes. Some times if a fish is sickly the eyes go cloudy.
Without any obvious symptoms of illness and the water been fine it is hard to say why they are dieing.

yeah, yesterday i noticed that on one or two occasions he was slightly away from the group but literally only for several seconds and apart from that he was fine. i kept a good eye on him but saw nothing. its weird when you keep fish how you notice little things. you really get to know youre own fish. i dont think anyone else would of spotted it. it was the same when the first one died.

Quote from link \"Fancy goldfish such as Fantails and Black Moors benefit from having their food soaked first as feeding at the surface can increase their risk of getting swim bladder problems (where the fish is unable to control buoyancy)\"

I never kept black moors but I know from personal experience it really stresses out marine clown-fish.

That would be a ecumenical matter!!!

HI Umm,
really sorry to hear this! first could i suggest you bring a sample of tank water and tap water to Your LFS and get it test. they might have a wider variety of test.

Sean has made a very good point there i would also suggest looking at the food you use ingredients and typical analysis

the chart below is for guppys but will possiabley help you

HI Umm,
there are a lot of possible harmful/useful things that can be in water some in small dosage a harmless.
because there is no reading in the standard test does not mean there is not something else.

A good example is copper we would not usually check for copper but as you will have read in other post this will kill inverts. because the symptoms do not shout anything in particular i would only be guessing. but i would look at Phosphate and possibly kh/dh

I am only guessing but considering the amount of rain we have been having lately this will effect water supply
this is only guess work but better to close this avenue early.

in this hobby its experence and guess work
