URGENT Sick molly
×
Hi,
John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.
I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.
With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.
I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.
If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.
I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.
I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.
Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Think one of my mollies is a bit under the weather.
It's a female and all she does is lie on the bottom of the tank.
She does eat but she's not as active as the rest of the fish, Should i take her out of the tank.
What should i treat her with to get her back to health?

Hi Steo_84,
I hope your molly is going to be ok.
On the PM you sent me, you mention that she had a clear lump on her belly and though it's gone, she is not behaving normally. Can you please give us more information on this? Is there an open wound ? any marks ?
I have heard that, when they are giving birth, they do 'sit' on the substrate but I don't have any mollies and I don't know if this is the case.
Have you checked your water parameters (ammonia, nitrite) ? Are the other fish behaving ok ?

As valerie stated it is more then likely your molly has just given birth, i have had them \"lie\" on the bottom of the tank for up to a week. watch the tank for small tadpole like fish in the vegetation more then likely in the small spaces of the plants. though they will be eaten by mum and the rest of the fish in your tank.
If more importantly you dont have a pair of mollies to therefore breed, then you need to state the fish in the tank, any changes in their behavior, get your water tested, and look for either fungus or white spot. if you find these things please get the right treatments. alot of the time i find mollies perk up after a wate rchange, and a cube of blood worms.
Just keep a close eye on her. more then likely she is just relaxing like every mother should after birth.
I hope this helps you and eases your fears.

Yes Mollies are livebearers which means they give birth to live fry. The fish pop out of her as such and can swim immediately. You would see them when you look into the tank, they tend to go to places hiding in plants,or down amongst the gravel. If you have an internal filter then check the inside of it as they tend to go the filter intake and can actually survive inside their as they have plenty to eat in there from the media inside the sponge etc.
How many mollys have you,how many males and females? Do u know how to identify.
Gavin

HI steo_84,
Sorry to hear about your lost! there are two things that come to mind at first 1. cyst this may have become infected and when it burst the fish was to sick to recover. second a miscarriage if there was some shock or the fish got a fright.
to be safe i would dose the tank melafix or esha 2000.
keep an eye for any odd behaviour. and if there is anything let us know
