Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)
Hi,
John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.
I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.
With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.
I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.
If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.
I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.
I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.
Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

My Syno has a broken barbel.
Its one of his long ones and is snapped about halfway, dangling limply.
What do I do about this?

Guffaw.
My Syno has a broken barbel.

You're first to be tackled tonight, if I can play.
All depends on if Deco is coming from Laytown later.
You out there Deco?
Back to the poor Syno, what would the infection look like?
Any precautions to take?

Pretty obvious, if it's bacterial a red raised mark, if it's fungal it will look like little white hairs. Look at mould closely and you get the idea
What some people don`t realise is that with a fungal infection there is usually an underlying bacterial infection. The fungus is only secondary.
fungus will grow on dead scales.
Most anti fungal are really anti bacterial remedies.
Thats why salt is so effective against it. Its the bacteria it kills not the fungus.
AND THATS WHY MELAFIX DOES NOT WORK. IT WORKS ON THE WRONG PRINCIPAL.
Its like you feeling ill and bathing yourself in Dettol.

I got fish off someone before and it destroyed my tank with flukes and bacterium.
I had Synodontis cats that looked like flys wrapped in spiders webs.
At the time I did not know the dangers of salt bathing catfish.
It worked wonders. It took him a few days to recover but he came back from the brink.
Cats are very strong. I have a big collection of Syno`s and when they fight it is vicious. They can inflict serious damage. Thankfully all is quiet. Territories sorted out.

Magnificent fish, can't wait to get him into a nice big home.
The barbel is looking better already, not as limp as yesterday.
I'm keeping a good eye on him.
This fish eats well and plays well with the others.
Has to chase off the cheeky algae eater on a regular basis, but no actual fighting.
The pet store where I bought this sold it to me as a pleco!
Are they expensive fish?

Are synodontis expensive? Depends on which species you have.

I'll try to get a pic.Ok, your pet store seems to be run by somebody who hasn't got a clue.

Excellent question, I was wondering the same thing. Anyone know the answer. I know I previous photographed a large garden spider several times with a flash he was dead an hour later. It was not from the handling as I had lifted him by his web and never touched him. I am pretty sure fish are not affected, but it would be good to know.
Hope your Syno recovers soon, great cats.

My favourite is the Shoutedeni.
Some don`t mix too well with L number plecos. Especially if they are Bigger than the plecos.
I had a Nigrita but he was too nasty, tried to kill my Royal. They fought like crazy and the Syno`s have the weapons. I know I got tagged by one doing a water change.

The tiger barbs look good, hard to get them these days without all the black blotches on the orange flanks.
