Swimming in Circles?
×
Hi,
John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.
I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.
With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.
I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.
If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.
I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.
I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.
Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

My molly (circa 6 months old, raised it from a fry up) is having problems at present.
She is about 1 inch in size and has developed a bump on her head. It protuding from the top of the head and is slighty fleshy but not a hole in the head type of injury either. She previously had this before also but it disappeared after a few days and she returned to normal. She is eating fine etc.
Another strange look about her is that her body seems to have become slighty disfigured lately. Her tail doesnt seem to have full movement from side to side and hence its small rapid shakes that propel her. However Ive also noticed that her body rises from the tail upwards and indeed the shape of the fish seems disjointed.
Last night I went in to have a look at her and she seemed very disstressed, she was swimming around in circles constanly (it was enough to make me dizzy). She was just going around in circles almost as if she couldnt swim properly. She eventually went to the bottom of the tank and rested but wasnt comfortable. This morning the circular swimming behaviour has stopped however she isnt swimming great, her body looks out of place somewhat.
I have two theories on this one. 1. That the bump in the head may be a tumour and that it is now effecting her neurological patterns. Hence the circular swimming motions.
2. That she is pregnant and has had some type of complication and that the pregnancy is not occuring as its meant to and hence has dis-shaped her slighty. (I did see a fellow male molly try to get it on last night).
Anyone have any idea of what this problem could be ? Im at the point now of considering humanely destroying her if I see the circular patterns develop again with her as it looks terrible for the poor fish.
Gavin

it could be nurological / tumour growth that is causing this as you suggested, but also as mollies are so line bred these days it could also be a malformation of the fish hence the disjointed look to the body, if it is so then humanely distroying the fish should be done (clove essence in water is a good way of doing this).. you def. shouldnt breed from it if it is malformed.. try to post a pic and we'll hoprfully get a better idea of what it is.

Will try to get a pic later,it looks much like it is indeed a disjointedfish. It looks as if the spine and tail are slighty curved and hence the circular swimming motions.

Hi Gavin,
Sounds like this poor wee thing has many problems to many at this early age. And won't get the life you would expect for it thus i would would agree with Seamus on the oil of cloves!
could i ask what you are feeding? variety is key and at six months it should be on the lower end of the protein range to avoid liver damage. It sounds like ascites(abdominal dropsy) but add tumours/cysts. this young and to have so many problems is not good and considering this is a second bout of this it is only making her quality of life poorer.

I agree Mickey, the fish is now gone R.I.P.
Indeed its spine was very twisted when it was dead,I also checked the tumour up close and it appears to be some sort of a legion or almost like hole in the head. (water defo is not an issue so I think it may have been an inverted tumour rather than hole in the head).
All other fish are fine thankfully. Mollys get some inbred nowadays its impossible to call what is going to happen them over the opening 12months of there live. The food is varied regularly, I feed them frozen blocks containing all sorts of good food such as bloodworms, molluscs etc...
I feed them flake food, pellets/tablets (as I about 8 corys and 1 ancistrus). And on occassion they get cucumber! As a special treat I give them bloodworms in Jelly.
I do feed a variety of food so no worries there.
In some ways Im glad the fish isnt there any more as it was clearly suffering and wasnt going to have a good live the way it was. Darwins law and all that eh!
